Knowing my luck, I'll be driving one of them.

Anyways, I don't actually know much about whats going on myself. But based on what limited information i've already been taugh about the things I would assume that the tanks would be out in the back-country. It makes sense, as their an off-road vehicle, and fairly useless in urban environments. Only thing I really think they could be used for is if a big riot breaks out and you want something really imposing, or the Chiniese, Americans, or Russians invade and you want to fight them off... In which case wish me good luck with that.

Another thought that makes more sense to me could be that the "Tanks" they are reffering too could infact be our tracked APC's, in which case they would be used to haul troops around. I wouldn't want to walk back and forth to all the different sites, and again, they are meant for off-road and aren't the best things to have in an urban environment. Again there is a chance I could be one of the lucky bastards that gets to drive the thing. Who knows.

Can tanks be used as anti-aircraft guns? That might be another reason they might want them around--in case someone tries to crash a plane into a stadium?

No. Tanks don't go well with aircraft. it's like throwing a hunk of raw fish into the shark tank at the aquarium. They simply go to fast for the main cannon to be effective, even jetliners. Not accurate enough. Thats what they invetend missles and anti-aircraft guns for.

While I'm again making an assumption here, The could be placed on the shoreline as anti-ship batteries. but by the time a ship gets in range of the main gun the tanks are already toasted by cruise missles. hitting small pleasure craft woulod again be a pain in the ass due to size and speed.

Yeah, discreet tanks, now thats a nice quote, sort of like a discreet smack with a 2x4 upside the head..

God only knows, we have to keep the elitists safe from obl while they play their games. And the best part is, the elite players get to participate in the olympics mostly at B.C. taxpayer expense - 99% of whom won't be able to afford to drive to them from Hope (at projections of 4.00/L), let alone anywhere else in the province, its great .

Tanks do have some anti-air abilities however. The US has the 120mm HEAT-MP-T rounds that are fused and can airburst. Not great but they also have canister rounds for things that get too close. I know we don't have it but the CV90's and many new AFV's can fire airburst ammunition also.

I think it will establish presence. Tanks are very imposing physcologically. People might think twice by seeing them. Other stuff will secure the venue.

Hence the uselessness of the things. I feel bad calling tanks useless, since I love them. Really all they are good for is taking out other land vehicles, blowing holes through buildings, or simply to look big, mean, and imposing...

actually, i find that the old C2s don't look all that big or imposing. although i think that would change if I saw the thing heading right for me at 70kph

Coyote is based on the LAV 25 old timer.

Anyways, the reporter should have been more specific as to what exactly was gonna be deployed and where they would be deployed... although that info is prolley classified and as such they made assumptions about what it is and where it's going.

Just for fun though, lets contemplate what else they could be sending... think they'll have frigates in the harbour?

For the air defence component there will be a 280 class Destroyer. Her SM2 system is capable of engaging any air threat out to 90 Knots. Deploying Frigates is possible but likely just to house the JTF2 and provide a Helo deck for rapid deployment.
As someone pointed out earlier the LAVs are ideal for covering back roads. They also make for great intimidation when the anti-poverty/anti-Olympic twits start a riot as anticipated.
