Most of the financial sector is noticeably less honest than Tony Soprano ever was. :|

That's what I said to RBC when the fuckers told me they were going to charge me a 3.75% fee for depositing cash into my account. And that if they weren't willing to take the coin of the realm at par I'd get someone to come from Buckingham Palace and lock them in the damn tower.
Didn't help. Closed my account then and there and went to the credit union.

Thanos Thanos:
This is why I think the banks should be obligated to provide a fee-free overdraft of, say, $500 to $1000 for every chequing account customer. It lets the customer cover the bills without being nailed by the wildly excessive NSF fees (typically $45 per NSF these days, which is absolutely criminal to be allowed to charge) and doesn't force them to go to the cheque cashers just to be able to keep their pay or assistance money for themselves.

The only thing this would create is a lot more people with a filled up overdraft
of $500 to $1000.
If they don't have the discipline to keep a few hundred in the bank,
they will just use the free money you want to force the banks to give away,
and then up the overdraft anyway. Which the rest of us get to pay for.

No thanks.

herbie herbie:
Instead of your overdraft idea I think the feds should require banks to cash gov't issued cheques for free so long as picture ID is supplied.
Or the Post Office should provide a free account and bank card w no overdraft, no cash handed out.

Both are good ideas - in Japan, the post office that exact service and it was very handy when I lived there.

I hate RBC and won't patronize them either. I know that most of the big banks act the same way, but I've yet to have any bad experience with my current bank.

all banks are my enemy. They are the most profitable organizations in Canada, but once you understand that compound interest works both ways, you can start to capitalize the same way banks do.
