Zipperfish Zipperfish:
Get rid of this position altogether. It's an expensive, anachronistic embarrassment.
Anachronistic is a nice little buzzword that anti-monarchists like to use, but the fact is that it really isn't true when you see that so many of the world's freest and best countries are monarchies to this day. That makes it just as contemporary an institution as any presidency.
Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom etc...
These are all very free, very democratic, very wealthy countries who profess a constitutional monarchy.
I would rather see the GG become an elected position before getting rid of it.
Without a GG, the PM with a parliamentary majority basically has the powers of a dictator with no check or balance to his authority.
An elected GG, however, would have the democratic legitimacy of, say, the president in a semi-presidential system. This would serve to be a real
contrepoids to the authority of the Prime Minister.
In any case, I don't think either possibility will come to pass any time soon. It takes the unanimous consent of all provincial legislations in order to change anything involving the Crown in the Constitution. I don't see that happening, frankly. Not for something so banal.
