HaRdLy HaRdLy: If anything that $400M would better spent on things like improving emergency room wait-times, Dr. shortages, nursing shortages, hospital bed closures, ambulance response times, etc, etc. Again, I don't disagree, but if the REAL waste were trimmed, lots of programs could be better funded, including health care and the Pride event.

Private sector funding, if the organizers care so much about this event, and the population should get this from private donations.

I saw this story on the Radio-Canada website earlier, and I'll post here in English what I posted in French on my Facebook...
I don't really have anything against this subculture in particular, but I don't see why the money that's ganked from my paycheque should go to a bunch of transvestites who want to have a parade. This event is a large tourist attraction for North American homosexuals, so private financing shouldn't be to hard to come by.

EyeBrock EyeBrock: Come on ken......this has been a big issue in Toronto on the Pride parade and the fact that an overtly anti-jewish group has broke the rules but hasn't been kicked out. The truth of the matter is that Pride brings in big bucks to the cities that host them. Everyone gains from restaurants to hotels to stores and street vendors. It costs money to make money.. I'm not 100% sure I agree with government funding for a lot of things.. but we all know where harper is heading..

I wonder if the feds were funding the Visaki parade in Surrey that glorified "martyrs" (ie terrorists) and people involved made threats against MPs? Which do you think is worse for society, a bunch of brokeback mountain boys prancing around, or terrorists getting govt support?

Our government won't fund this parade, but will allow a "terrorist parade" in B.C.

Alta_redneck Alta_redneck: kenmore kenmore: but we all know where harper is heading.. A majority? I wouldn't count on it with all the BS he's pulled off this year already. At this rate, in 5 years when someone says his name, the resposne will invariable be, "Who? Ohhh you mean that stupid, American ass kissing, Brian Mulroney wanna be?"

All the more reason to vote Conservative. The 'pride' parade is a waste of time and space anyways. Downtown Toronto really doesn't need to be clogged fll of floats with gays spraying people with super soakers, and dressed like rejects.
There are far better things the government can fund than this garbage. Send the money towards reducing the deficit, or invest in transportation or something.

HaRdLy HaRdLy: Lemmy Lemmy: HaRdLy HaRdLy: Fuck that, we are taxed to death in this province as it is. I don't disagree with that and I'm not suggesting NEW taxes, but, without doing any research, I'd guess that the Pride parade is worth several million dollars in economic value to the Province and the City of Toronto. A $400M investment that generates millions in business revenue and tax revenue seems like the sort of event that we'd be foolish to cancel. It's not like it's money frivolously spent. There are lots of places to cut that don't have big-time economic spin-off benefits. If anything that $400M would better spent on things like improving emergency room wait-times, Dr. shortages, nursing shortages, hospital bed closures, ambulance response times, etc, etc. $400,000... just to remind everyone.

2Cdo 2Cdo: IF they funded it, that would be wrong. I don't agree with government funding for ANY parade of ANY group. Not even the Santa Claus parade? I can accept that the Feds shouldn't be funding this, or even perhaps, the province. But municipalities funding parades (and community events like parades) is exactly what municipal governments are supposed to do. Like I said earlier, $400K is a small investment for the benefits of the Pride parade to the city of Toronto. It's a worthy thing for Toronotonians to be spending on. I don't think, similarly, that Torontonians should expect Montrealers or Calgarians to chip in though.

-J. Again... the money is an investment that usually brings in millions. It's economics here. Invest money to make much more money. How much road will you buy with $400,000 and how much money will it bring in? As for the rest, your bias is showing.
