Everyone convicted should spend at least one month in jail.

Never mind writing the apology letters, just a waste of paper.

Poor guy, he was so shocked! He thought he was going to get off scot free.
I wonder where he would get an idea like that?

A year ago the public would have been outraged at such a lenient sentence. Now some are saying he shouldn't get any jail time, after all he gave himself up didn't he?
Do yah think he would have given himself up if he hadn't of been on video?

If I'd done something like that when I was young, I would have prayed for the longest sentence possible... way better than what would have been waiting for me at home. 8O

Agreed.

They set the bar way to low with this one.

I just hope that any of the other asshats who participated in the riot and have a criminal records get one hell of alot more time than this clown.

so, it would have been more like protective custody than an actual sentence. Unfortunately, that couldn't have saved me, as my dad was a correctional officer.

As for the title of this article... DUH. A virgin who's done it once is no longer an innocent either...

First time for everything. Crime is crime is crime in this case... book'em Danno. XD

Although, after watching coverage of the LA fans throwing up gang signs and preening like gangsta peacocks in their gear outside the stadium in LA, I'm starting to wish the 'Nucks had gotten through XD

What's "no prior record" got to do with anything? Is a first offense an automatic no-time thing now regardless of the crime? CTV sure fell all over themselves with the headline alone to be obnoxiously sympathetic to the ignorant little puke. There's a perfect example of your asshole media right there.

Read to the end of the story:
$1:
In February, another 20-year-old, Ryan Dickinson, was given 17 months in jail for his role in the riot.

Like Alviar, the young man pleaded guilty and admitted to vandalizing a police car and a business, but Dickinson had a prior conviction on his record.

He received 16 months for participating in a riot and another month for breaching his bail conditions from an unrelated assault charge.

Sitting on his ass for the next few months? There should be some sort of community service attached to this, like cleaning up the streets/parks and other ways to make amends for the damage he and his ilk caused. I'd like to see a form of societal indenture be attached to the sentences for these types of crime, as a form of restitution and rehabilitation.

We just assume that being in Canada, you get a pass for just about anything if it's your first offence.

I would have liked a longer sentence to send a message that this kind of crap isn't acceptable.

That happens all the time to people in all walks of life. If someone does something stupid or snaps and goes postal, courts always take that into account.

I guess the theory is to punish repeat offenders more harshly than those who make a mistake. But I have to admit I don't like it very much.
