DrCaleb DrCaleb:
The reports I heard say the men were radicalized in prison after being convicted of trying to recruit fighters in France for the war in Iraq. At that time, their lawyer said they were 'punks', not hard core jihadis.
It's easier to turn 'back' people like that, than actual Jihadis. Too bad they didn't want to live.
Very common scenario, even people converted then radicalized in prison. these guys do seem like actual Jihadis to me - trained in Yemen, fairly good at that attack. The made bad mistakes afterwards, tho, including leaving their id in the vehicle they abandoned. Any good gangster in Vancouver knows you burn the car you used to make a hit with.
They would have been easier to turn when they originally went to prison. Time govts paid more attention to people convicted of minor jihadi offenses and isolates the people who are doing the converting in prison. For sure, deny them internet access or monitor it closely, block jihadi sites. If the Chinese can do it for a whole country, surely we can do it for a prison. But then, for some reason, we don't seem too interested in even keeping drugs out of prison.
