If they bought their own homes maybe they would take care of them. Build your own house, if you can't get one then move to a city and rent/buy your own.

Canada does not owe first nations homes in which to live.

Also, not intending to be snarky, but the entire community has mould problems, and its usually because their homes aren't built with proper ventilation for dryers, bathrooms and kitchens. Having to use electric base board heating too, because there is no natural gas to the community, only a diesel generator.

It's not a maintenance problem, it's just where they live does not mesh with building codes of the homes built in the south.

And it is the government's responsibility, usually by Treaty if not the Indian Act.

If you can't get sufficient housing in your community, you move. Canada is an awesome place. Lot of places to move and live.

A couple very inexpensive options to vent homes and trailers could take place. As I said, pride of ownership. I don't want to live in a mouldy house. Even if I didn't pay for the house, I'd take steps to maintain and improve the property. Adding a dryer vent, dehumidifier or exhaust vents are very inexpensive.

But, Canada is responsible for providing infrastructure to all of her Citizens.

Our government consistently wastes resources on feel good projects, like providing homes, but consistently neglects permanent solutions to the problem, like tying all of Canada into a solid infrastructure support system.

Yes, the permanent solution is expensive. Still gonna be cheaper than all of the feel good solutions used to mask the problem.

Effectively, yes, according to the cockamamie way these treaty obligations have been defined by the courts.

Canada should abolish the damn treaties and refuse them.

Use the not with standing clause when the courts try to pass BS. If they want a home they build it they also maintain it, that should not be our job to support them forever.

You want to live in the middle of nowhere build a tee-pee and live like their ancestors. Maybe the chiefs can stop buying new vehicles and recreation vehicles and put money into housing.

This should not be a generational issue.

Abolish the Indian Act and have all Canadians be equal under the law....

There was some talk for a bit about building homes for the Natives using the modular construction methods used for the work camps near Fort McMurray because those things are built specifically for the conditions of the humidity-prone & cold regions of this country and for locales far out of the reach of the standard utility infrastructure. So of course the usual ignorant suspects started ranting "whitey racists gonna make us live in old shipping containers and trailers!" in response, and the idea died out pretty quickly. Typical Canadian way, find any excuse not to do anything to really help people in distress even though the solutions are there right in front of our eyes.

This is obviously beyond what a person can clean up on their own, especially in a remote community. Mould remediation companies don’t exist for nothing and I doubt there any on a fly-in Reserve in Northern Ontario

Also telling people they should just move as if it’s so easy to leave your entire support network, all your friends and family and anyone you know and trust, somehow gather the money pack all your belongings into an airplane ...and go where? With no money they should just move to some inner city slum where they don’t know anyone I guess ?
