Still, you need just a little bit of respect when dealing with any animal that can kill you. I've had a lot of meetings with bears and had no concerns either. Never tried to pet or feed them too.

When I lived in Jasper I used to run into bears on the bike trails often. I had a bear bell on my bike, so they knew I was coming. When we met, we just respected each others space, and there were no problems.

I knew a few people though that got treed' by bears. No big deal. Everyone went home afterward.

But Elk . . .those are nasty mean and very large animals. I didn't trust them at all.

General point of fact.....never trust anything with antlers, especially the female of the species with young or the male in rutting season!!! Horns come next with the same provisions followed by claws and teeth.....especially big cats!!!

Very true! I grew up on a small farm, and you never turned your back on a goat!

Those bastards will knock the wind right out of you if you don't watch them.

I should also have added beaks and wings as anyone who has ever come face to face with a pissed off Canada Goose or an irate Sandhill crane will attest to....

Any others out there???

Absolutely. When we've gone to the local park lately there are a few Canada Goose families and we always make sure to not get too close and to watch the behavior of moms and dads.

Crows are notorious for attacking people who happen, often without knowing it, to walk too close to a tree that contains a nest. They sometimes have their family, friends and neighbors in on it too. I've known a few people to get dive-bombed by them. There is a particular section of parking at the hospital that is lined with trees the crows decided long time ago to use for nesting in. I think they still have signage in place to warn people.

Lately I've been frequently seeing several crows (maybe 6-10) swarming an eagle that must have gotten too close to a nest. The racket they make is unreal and the aggressiveness they display towards the eagle is almost scary. 8O If one crow tried it he'd be toast of course, but that strength-in-numbers approach seems to work effectively despite the size difference between the two. I've sometimes wondered once they are out of my view if the eagle made it or not.

Macaques in and around Kaohsiung were nasty bastards if they suspected anyone had food on them. Always carried a big stick when hiking in the bush. The mean little shits would come right into classrooms on the university campus, and try and rifle through backpacks.

Look at that face... looks almost like a dog to me. :D

Seals are quite closely related to dogs. Apparently, they both belong to the suborder Caniformia of the order Carnivora.

Sometimes Leopard seals do look like dogs but other times they look like pythons. Scary.

Hordes of parents dejected after Steveston sea lion fails to eat their children

Image

$1:
Nearing the levels of mass chaos of the 2011 Vancouver hockey riot, unruly throngs of forlorn and distraught parents have been streaming out of Steveston after the now-famous sea lion refused to bite or consume their children.

After a video of a sea lion grabbing a girl and yanking her into the sea went viral, thousands of parents rushed out en masse to the same location, seeking to replicate the incident so that they could become famous and perhaps parlay that fame into a career as a reality TV star, complete with endorsement deals, clothing lines, and inappropriate product placements.

Failing that, many parents, who were witnessed dangling their children over the edge of the wharf in desperate bids for child endangerment, opined that they simply wanted the sea lion to snatch away their offspring and be done with them.

Others felt dejected that their children were not appetizing and attractive enough for the sea lion. Witnesses say they saw parents scolding their children to work harder and warning them that they would be enrolled in more remedial classes if they continued to underperform.

Even Kris Jenner was said to be seen at the wharf with Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé Kardashian (more commonly known as the KKK) in the hopes that one of her girls would be bitten, thereby revitalizing their sagging brand (and other body parts).

Consequently, officials issued a reminder that it is illegal to feed your children to wildlife. However, if you do so, you are urged to dispose of any leftover waste in secure, closed containers.

The viral video garnered international headlines, with the likes of news anchor Stephen Colbert reporting on the incident at the 2:25 mark. Colbert even properly identified the man who rescued the girl by his official title: sexy action grandpa.

At the same time, Canadian singer-songwriter Feist's song "Sea Lion Woman", inspired by the incident several years prior to the fact, became the unofficial theme song for Steveston.

Meanwhile, a possible radioactive leak occurred at Washington's Hanford Nuclear Reservation, located 400 kilometres from Vancouver but the incident was deemed of less importance and therefore garnered less international news coverage as no marine mammals were directly involved.
