GEORGIA MOVES 1000 SOLDIERS FORM IRAQ TO SOUTH OSSETIA

US backs Georgia territory integrity; sends envoy
$1:
Ex-Soviet Georgia has allied itself with the West and is pushing for membership in NATO, a bid strongly backed by the Bush administration. It lies at the heart of a region emerging as a vital energy transit route.

Georgia last month increased the size of its military to 37,000 soldiers and today Saakashvili called up reservists and urged the nation to defend ``every meter'' of land. Russia has a standing army of about 1.1 million.

Kinda makes you wonder who would win in an all out war without outside interference.

Georgia is outmatched, outgunned, and soon to be overrun, and the USA is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong. this is fantastic. the only way Georgia is going to remain sovereign is with US or other nations support, but that of course, will draw the wrath of Russia, The Bear is stirring....

The bear is what it's been for most of the last century. A corrupt oppressive regime that invades it's neighbours.

I'd be scared if I was in Western Europe right now. Turning the oil and gas taps off that Germany et al are now so reliant on will be the first move.

Nice to see the usual anti-yank types are blaming all this on the US.

You make it sound like Russia just invaded Georgia for shits and giggles, when actually they attacked after 12 Russian peacekeepers were killed, and a sovereign nation (South Ossetia) was invaded by Georgia. also South Ossetia is comprised mainly of Russian citizens, Russia is protecting its own. I think the United States has nothing to do with this, however the US needs to stay out of this. Russia has regained most of what it lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

As my post is the only one on here with any mention of the US I assume you intend to ostracize? I am ambivalent toward us interest in Georgia, I simply stated a fact that US interest there have provoked a response that was to be seen from miles and years away. It's not like this situation simply evolved overnight and it's not like US interests are unwarranted either it's simple cause and effect. Frankly, I'm amazed it took this long.

please show me an independent country called South Ossetia at any point in history.
The international border is recognized as Georgia, by everyone.
also South Ossetia is comprised mainly of Russian citizens, Russia is protecting its own. .
Passports handed out without questions, in order to support an insurgency..
sre, no problems there.. its a scam llama.

Where do you think the Georgians turned after the collapse of the Soviet Union ?
Of course the Americans are involved, they are involved deeply in Georgia,
but to think they will just stay out of this is lunacy.

Russia has regained most of what ??? land.. no
influence.. some
money.. sure
aggressiveness.. absolutely.. they will win the North if we arent more careful.

Im guessing you are just a rabid anti Yank, that everything the US does is wrong..
no questions asked...

South Ossetia actually pre-dates Georgia. here is a security brief on South Ossetia http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... ssetia.htm
Here is the history (via Wikipedia (o how I hate Wikipedia))

Of course Georgia turned to the United States, the US was strong and Russia was in Chaos, the US can't get involved, the military is stretched too thin (Iraq, Afghanistan) to effect anything more than a token force. Also the fact that Russia could supply Iran with weapons very easily making any potential US attack a costly one.

thanks for the links, it only proves my point that Ossetia has never been indpendent.. they have tried, but they have always been part of Russia, Georgia, or the Mongols.

Yes Comrade. I'm obviously mistaken.
It would appear that a nation of 140 million is merely protecting it's own ( who reside within Georgia's borders) by sending in tanks against a nation of 4 million.
Georgia's army of 18,000 are a real threat to Russia's million plus armed forces.
And I'm sure Russia will gain way more of it's old Soviet empire back as long as weak western nations, reliant on it's oil, turn the other cheek as Russia merrily sends it's panzers into bordering nations.

Just goes to show that little has changed in the new CCCP. Same shit they were doing in the 20th century but now they got oil.

This isn't a trait the Russians picked up under socialism. The vast majority of what was the Russian Empire, and later the Soviet Union, was carved out of Eurasia under the rule of the Tsars. They've got all the dressings and trappings of Tsarist Russia, not the Soviets. A resurgent and powerful Russian Orthodox Church, imperial crests and a rebirth of Russian nationalism(not the brotherhood of all ethnic groups preached by the Bolsheviks) all point in one direction. So any day I expect Putin to be proclaimed Tsar, or appoint a puppet Tsar under the guise of establishing a constitutional monarchy.

The same is happening in China. Once the past was reviled, now they glorify the accomplishments of the Chinese Emperors. China too, shows signs of imperial ambition. Authoritarianism has always been a hallmark of Chinese governments from time immemorial. Socialism, as an economic system, is alien if not anathema to Chinese culture. The Chinese have always been consummate entrepreneurs and they are demonstrating this, along with the rebirth of the Middle Kingdom syndrome.

The Bear and Dragon are flexing their muscles and being in such close proximity to one and other makes for some interesting potentialities.
