The UN is a failed organization, they have done nothing in there time except fail at what they are meant to do and give terrorist nations a voice and collaborate with them.

So to the United Nations, ask us if we care we diddn't land a seat in the UN. Canada: Sorry what? Wasn't paying attention, we lost our big for a UN seat? Oh noes, what ever sha'll we do. We need a seat in a organization that pretends they are doing something when in reality they don't do crap. Therefor by being apart of them, we as a nation can appear we are doing something despite not doing crap as apart of the United Nations and doing it all on our own anyways.

It had little to do with Israel or our policies, it was about bloc voting and the EU. The Globe and Mail had a good article on how the voting is done, too bad our media seems to prefer portraying it as somehow all Harper's fault. Well, Iggy didn't help. LOL

The entire process of selecting UNSC memebers has all the legitimacy of a high school popularity contest.

US abandoned Canada

India and China backed Portugal

Too little, too late

$1:
Canada has served six terms on the council, once a decade since 1945 and won each time, with many delegations preferring Ottawa because of the number of Europeans on the council. But the conservative government in Ottawa was considered uninterested, with Prime Minister Harper, who took power in 2006, last year skipping a chance to address the General Assembly and attending an event at a doughnut shop at home.

Among the reasons Canadian pundits cited were a strong pro-Israeli policy, a reduction of aid to Palestinian refugees and well as to African nations. Ottawa, certain of victory, also campaigned late - although delegates did get a jar of maple syrup.

This has little to do with Harper or Iggy or even the US. This has to do with China and India wanting a permanent seat on the SC.

In fact, U.S. State Department insiders say that U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice not only didn’t campaign for Canada’s election but instructed American diplomats to not get involved in the weeks leading up to the heated contest. With no public American support, Canada lost its bid to serve. That gives the EU more than 25% control of the body and a strong voting block to ensure EU priorities become global priorities. -- This was the second time a high profile ally could have used U.S. help yet Rice chose to stay silent.

The US under Obama doesn't seem very inclined to aid its traditional allies.

Dismal performance by the torys. When are they going to get it? Their foreign policy sucks and stop pointing at the opposition. Lets put blame where it should be!

Come on ken. The Islamic Bloc (OIC) voted against us. 57 countries. I know you are no fan of that Bloc.

There is no dis-honour in this one. Canada actually stands up for something these days, unlike in our recent past.

Agreed, we should also take into account the fact that Canada is maybe naive and not into bribery. U.N.'s loss - Canada's gain.

I don't know what we've gained... we are the 7th largest contributor to the UN budget, maybe its time we examined ways to better spend that money.

Looks like those petulant snots in the UAE were busy.

http://www.cbc.ca/politics/story/2010/1 ... uncil.html

$1:
A UAE official says the country lobbied against Canada's bid for a United Nations Security Council seat in the latest blow to relations that have soured after disputes over airline routes.

The official says the United Arab Emirates opposed Canada's UN effort in part because of its trade policies. Canada failed earlier this week to win one of the non-permanent Security Council seats after coming behind Portugal in second ballot voting in New York.

The UAE has pushed back hard against Ottawa for not opening up more routes for its airlines Emirates and Etihad. Canadian troops are being forced to leave Camp Mirage, a military base in Dubai used to supply Canadian forces in Afghanistan.

The UAE official spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because of standing government rules on behind-the-scenes briefings.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said the lack of support from Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff for Canada's bid helped scuttle it, an assertion Ignatieff called "ridiculous."

The Liberals have also criticized the Conservative government's handling of negotiations with the UAE, but NDP defence critic Jack Harris said he supported the government on the issue.
