Scape Scape: Ya it's the same usual suspects griping as usual. If they need to see what good the UN they could open their eyes and see child mortality rates dropping but then that would oppose their world view and i suppose we can't have that... Example: http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_t ... ecade.htmlAll the finger pointing makes Canada look like a bunch of amatures. Time to put a cork in it and sort that sh*t out. That's it? The UN is a viable organisation because child mortality rates are dropping? How about if two thirds of it's member goverments stopped buying BMW's for themselves or Migs and F16's, they could be sorting out their own child mortality issues? The RAF did more in the Ethiopian famine than the UNHCR did. I know 'cos I was there.

desertdude desertdude: Hmmm..all sorts of crtisicm of a sudden start flying about. Sour grapes maybe ?
Just saying. There are several members here who have been saying this about the UN for YEARS. So it's not a sudden criticism, but one that has existed for myself since the late 80's. early 90's when I witnessed the absolute uselessness of this organization.

Yea, DD finds it amazing that we actually had opinions on Islam, the Arab world, Israel, immigration, the UN etc before he joined us in May 2010.

The conservatives began their government in 2006 with a manual for its MPs about how to disrupt parliament and make it unworkable. They passed fixed election date legislation, and then violated it 18 months later. They promised to never appoint a senator, then appointed a record number of them. They promise 'staunch and unwaivering support for Israel', saying that they will support them no matter what they do.
Why the hell would any member of the U.N. want Harper there?

Nah, they would rather have Iran leading the Womens Rights group and Libya, Zimbabwe and China running the Human Rights group.

Why the hell would any member of the U.N. want Harper there? Thats the best partisan bullshit I've read for a while. Suffice it to say the UN let Arafat, Mugabe and Iamawhackjob in, and they seem to love that bunch

I can see the headline now. Or maybe I can't because the Security Council hasn't mattered a whit to anybody until this week. Pure schadenfreude by the partisan Liberals who can only bring such earth shattering debates to the table as the long-form census and other things that nobody cares about.

It's the first time we have been denied a spot on the security council. What the Harper government calls "principled", is an inability to compromise, not the traditional sense. It has a habit of altering its principles to suit its needs at any given moment. The vote for the security council spot reflects how the Harper government has alienated Canada.

Just stop talking if you can't defend your position. Israel has the opportunity at any time to establish permanent borders. That's the only thing it would take to stop the violence there. Why support them if they won't do that?

The fact that the Palis arent smart enough to get in there and negotiate it, is just another sign of their stupidity.
