PS I have seen female nurses use non violent crises intervention many times without male assistance and they have had postive outcomes.. no injuries..

I know someone who does home visits to mental patients with violent histories, and when she goes to visit them, she gets a police escort.

well I think that is a bit much... what province is she in.. here we have community teams that work together.. if a client is a risk they usually pair up. but it is a mental health worker team .. why would the police be involved ?
this goes against client confidentiality.. the only reason police need to be involved is when there has been an assault or a crime has been committed or the client is on a form or community treatment order... I would think this is non therapeutic...

It is..... possible that she could have done a faceplant onto the floor. A broken nose could have resulted in two black eyes and that couls also explain the broken teeth and cut on her brow. This situation was poorly handled and because the cop turned off the recording it brings suspicion onto him, even if what he says happens to be true.

I don't know the circumstances around it.
Maybe it was a form/community treatment order, I don't know what that is either, but I would think there would be a good reason for it.

I worded this wrong. It was a conversation that happened several years ago. She said (more to this effect, because I can't remember the conversation verbatim) she has had a police escort before because of a patient's(client's?)
past history. I don't know if there were/are continuing visits or not.

well for your information heavy_metal I have been in a closed room with unmedicated schizophrenic... and I am trained in non violent crises intervention.. its how you interact and treat someone that counts.. even with the most violent you can use this method to restrain and secure. the police kick the shit out of people (makes them feel good I guess) when situtations could be different.. I have been a psych nurse many years and I have worked Forensic Units, and in a penitentiary so I have the experience.. the cops need more training with how to deal with the mentally ill and people in general..
I wouldnt critcize if I had not witnessed their brutality first hand.

i agree with you that police need sublimental training with regards to mentally ill individuals among other things, if for nothing else to help stop suicide by police.

but i am still not convinced on the non violent crises intervention.

you do not say whether you are male or female, i will take the stereotypical look at your profession and deduce that you are female. People, especially MI people act differently around different sexes, i'm sure i am preaching to the choir here, and yes you have mentioned that you have seen this non violent crisis intervention work with out a man on hand, that's all well and good, but what you are not taking into account is the psychological power of the uniform, most of the time the MI individual doesn't see the person, only the uniform and reacts to that. when that reaction takes place, Mother Theresa's own sweet voice wouldn't calm that person down.

I take offence to your claim of police kicking the shit out of people because it makes them feel good, i could counter with pointing out the down falls of psych nursing, but what would that accomplish? I would just like to point out the ignorance and irrelevance of your comment.
