Ok, but to be fair the only Christian extremists I can think of are the ones that picket abortion clinics or soldiers funerals. That's a far cry from cutting peoples heads off. Not to mention that we are always told that true Muslims are taught to be peaceful and respectful of laws, which is what Christians are taught as well. Therefore I would argue that people that don't follow these practices aren't true Muslims or Christians.
It's not Islam that's fucked. It's the culture that many of these people have adopted in pre-Islamic times. Mohammed (real prophet or not) tried to change their oppressive and tribalist ways, however the whole thing got perverted and twisted into one massive cultural-religious mess.
Europeans (Greeks, Macedons, etc) had discovered liberty already around 500BC, and expanded its concept well into the twilight of the Roman Empire. The Christians took these liberties away, but the concept was ingrained deep in the culture and all Europpeans did was re-discover it during the renaissance.
This was a period when Islam was in a golden age and they led the world scientifically. They also had the world's largest library and stored many texts that the Christians had burned during their campaign of terror.
However the muslim world has always been a beacon of oppression. In pre-Islamic times. The Kingdom of Babylon had a system very similar to serfdom, with wealthy landowners literally holding all wealth and political power. Other parts of the non urbanised pre muslim world had remained largely tribal. The concept of liberty, even during the Hellenistic period didn't take root.
I can't be arsed to type anymore, but you get the idea, throw in religion to this tribal society, and it's like watching explosive compounds ignite.
The biggest problem of all is that the majority of people in the muslim world are poor, and oppressed, due to failed policies of the theocrats (and dictators). The poor masses have began to equate the rich business-men who treat them like cattle with the western middle and upper classes (even though there is no connection) and this is where much of the hatred is festered.
