Its just kind of sad that there is no readily available, or reliable system to stop these leaks and they are allowed to build these rigs knowing this. Designing stuff once it happens is a total fail and in no way acceptable.

Nothing we do is ever 100% failsafe, but you can certainly way up the odds by being cautious. How does Norway manage to extract oil while requiring the oil companies to have that safety shut off, while somehow in the US they need an exemption? Same reason Norway actually manages to charge a decent royalty on the oil, and yet the oil companies still come. I mean if a well isn't profitable because of a required $500,000 gizmo, then maybe we should leave that oil in the ground until it is.

Didn't know that, and good question then.

Actually what irritates me about the Obama Administration are two things.

1. The USA gets 64% of it's crude oil from Canada and 12% from the Middle East.

Obama was criticizing the Alberta Oil Sands, but when BP starts to create a tar pit in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, little was said or done.

Now it has become a major environmental nightmare...

2. Illegal Immigration, Janet Napolitano whith her statement "911 terrorists came from Canada" has never really accepted that fact that is a lie and concentrates more on securing the US/Canada border (what from, I'm not sure... a stray moose) and her own state of Arizona (where she was ex-Governor) suffers from an onslot of illegals and drugs.

What I realize is that the Obama Administration are Hypocrites, they seem to hate Canada, while on the other hand want the USA to resemble the greatest nation and most financially sound nation in the world Canada.

I know your motivations differ, but your issues with the Obama crowd are much the same as the Tea Party folks.

O.K. Bart I will agree with you on this point.

However, your defense of Libertarian views of pre-1964 laws that segregation is O.K. is pretty dam distasteful.

I think votes for Libertarian is just as stupid or crazy as the lefties socialist vote for the Obama administration.

Rand Paul is a nut case to think that any kind of segregation or discrimination by any body is O.K.

I think that a fence that runs the length of the southern border needs to be built.

Sorta like the one below, but double.. enough room for a (bullet proof) vehicle to run between the two..



After that is done, start looking at immigration reform.

Fine or penalize businesses who hire illegals and give work permits to illegals already employed or in the country.

I would call it the yellow card (a foul in soccer).. good for 5 years, stay out of trouble, pay taxes, etc..., then you can apply for a green card..

At least they know who is here and gives them time to do background checks over 5 years.

I did not defend those laws. And those laws did not say it was "okay" to segregate, those laws MANDATED segregation. That's the intellectual point Rand Paul was going after and, frankly, the majority of people are too goddam stupid to understand an intellectual argument so he probably should have avoided making those comments.

Promises don't mean shit. We don't have the demonstrated technology to be safe drilling at those depths.
