You can tell an election is looming.

But, all that aside I'm not convinced we'll get the 15 warships as promised. Because, given cost overruns are a certainty and the fact we're getting sued for less than ethical procurement practices I'd say the $60B cost is around 2/3 of what the total cost will end up being which means the gov't will have to pony up more money or, instead of the 15 promised warships we'll be lucky to get 10.

Anybody want to bet which one it'll be?

We'll get five ships out of it, they'll all suck (courtesy of both Lockheed's usual rip-off game and from the Canadian way of doing things for the military), and in ten years the boondoggle will be the subject of a short CBC story and on page four of what remains of the Globe & Mail.

And don't forget these are the guys we're buying these ships from:

It isn't the 1930's and the RN isn't the powerhouse in shipbuilding it once was so I'm a little skeptical these warships will be built without a myriad of costly gremlins already built in which will add to the "real" cost once they're discovered during sea trials.

Well, we may not have to wait till sea trials to find out these ships aren't what we need.

$1:
The embrace of the Type 26 is a change from the Department of National Defence’s earlier examination of the vessels as it was being developed by the United Kingdom’s defence ministry. The DND had its eye on the Type 26 as far back as 2011 but rejected taking part in the program as well as any interest in the design as it did not meet Canadian needs, according to briefings obtained by Postmedia through the Access to Information law.

An examination into the Type 26 by the DND noted that the design could be modified for Canadian needs but concluded the “technical and programme risk would be high.”

Hopefully this isn't another case of new and shiny being new and not effective.
