lily lily: He left the papers at her house and no-one realized they were missing for a month.
It's her fault though. Of course it is. Who else's would it be? Wait for it. I'm sure the usual hacks will somehow try and blame the Liberals.

You could spin this stroy so that it is actually worse that he would be stupid enough to date someone who would take the papers out of his briefcase...

His "girlfriend" took the doccuments in question to the press, instead of returning them to her boyfriend. She deliberately acted to embarrass him in the most public way. That's such an obvious set-up, it's no wonder that the public see through it.

That's such an obvious set-up, it's no wonder that the public see through it. Of course it was a set up. TVA (The Quebec media outlet that broke the story) surely knew before they broke the story. Probably only to get the ''exclusive''. How else could it be explained that they (TVA) ran news reports about Couillard even before that story got out. She was a pure unknown, yet, they published some reports about her. Then again, as mentioned, she could have just returned the documents to Bernier himself but instead she chose to run to the media with it. I would bet a large amount of money that it was a set up by TVA, after all, these journalists would stab anyone in the back in order make the Federal govt look scandaleous. Plus, they are the most ''biased'' news organisation ever seen.

Is this the first time that defence doccuments have been left in unsecure locations? I recall a folder that was left in a Paris resteraunt that caused quite a problem.
Ultimately, it's his fault for losing track of the folder, but the report says that the folder was always in a briefcase and he never took them out while he was there. The report indicates that Ms Couillard removed the folder from the case.
"Ms. Couillard may have put herself in jeopardy of having contravened a provision of the Security of Information Act," the report adds.
Now who are we going to believe here? The minister or the woman the CBC has been playing up as the uneliable, untrustworthy biker chick?

The fact that you refuse to find fault with anyone except the minister is telling. I simply pointed out that this has happened before and the NATO alliance has remaned strong. As I stated previous, the minister is ultimatly responsible for his briefs but loosing track of his briefcace is less of a crime than unqualified and unauthorized people taking things from it.

None of this would have happened at all if her "boyfriend" hadn't left them there in the first place, and then proceeded to forget their existence for a month. Lily, I would not want to argue or play the ''he said, she said'' game . Perhaps, Bernier should have been more careful. But this chick was out to get him. But, It had to be a set by the media in order to create a Conservative scandal. She was probably approached by TVA beforehand and told to steal the documents. She had the documents for a while before she even went to the media and this whole story broke out. Actually not sure of this, but from what I have heard, The reason that the documents were never traced by Ottawa is that they did not compromise National Security. But then again, someone else could elaborate better than I could on this. Also, something needs to be said about the Quebec media. TVA is to the Federal govt what the CBC is to the Conservatives . They protect nationalism (PQ and Bloc) while portraying any Federal govt as scandaleous. One example is Adscam. TVA is still talking about that very matter, eventhough the story broke, in what... 2003. This is what they call ''bias'' in the media. So, back to topic, TVA is probably scared that the Conservatives are taking up some ground in QC, at the cost of some Bloc votes. They had to come up with something scandaleous in order to protect their ''friends'' at the Bloc.

That a junior politician in a senior cabinet position made mistakes in protocol is one thing, and frankly how this could not be expected is beyond question, but the fact that this young turk was given so much slack by the system that is responsible for securing such documents is the real issue here. Either the PMO's office superseded their authority or the system in place to secure classified documents is inadequate. As I have heard of no changes to the system itself one must assume that PMO gave the go ahead here. It's not like he didn't have a history of being lax here, it was common knowledge and he was an embarrassment to the PMO but he was left to carry on because he is a Quebecer and the cons are so desperate to win votes there they would put party before country. Such lapse in judgment should not be excused and should be rightly condoned at the polls.

lily lily: If this was a set up, then Bernier himself had to have participated, since the key element was the briefcase he lft there, and promptly forgot about. But I'm impressed at the lengths some Cons will go to blame anyone and everyone for their screw-ups. Not sure if this comment was directed at me, but I am not a partisan to any political parties . Yes, I will keep voting Conservative since they reflect my views. The point that I was trying to make is the media's involvement in this whole issue. They were so eager to blame Bernier and the Conservatives that they simply left out that (insert word here ) Couillard. Made her look innocent in all news reports. Again, it was never explained, unless I missed it, the reason it took so long for her to reveal that she had the documents. Apparently she had them for a while before going to the media (TVA). Speaking of TVA, if only most of you could understand French so you could watch this ''biased'' news organization. They are against anything that has to do with the Federal govt, whether it be Liberal or Conservative. They are the ones that broke the story, and began speaking of Couillard's involvment with Bernier only days before this entire story came out. I am not arguing Bernier's incautiousness. I agree with you guys on some level, although not everything . To start, he should have never brought the documents so she could have access to them. And also, should have noticed the documents were missing. But, what about Couillard in all of this? The media has barely described her involvment and has portrayed her as a saint. She could have simply made a phone call to Bernier or even Ottawa, but instead chose to go straight to the media. This all looks fishy, hence the reason for stating this had to be a set up.

The whole screw up was his fault.... end of story .. the guy is incompetent but I think he will be re-elected by his constituent... the tories are down playing the seriousness of this and how Canada has been effected on the world stage... making the report on a Friday before a long week-end shows how inept Harper is... and the government for sure will beat the crap out of her.. even though they didnt think that relationship was any concern.. ya right...

lily lily: There's a good idea. She could have gone straight to Bernier and given him the documents back - the documents that he apparently didn't know were missing - and no-one would be the wiser.
Why is this the preferable scenario? Is it such a bad thing that an incompetent minister is exposed? Don't we have the right to know about such screw-ups? He didn't know the file was missing because she stole it from the case. She took it directly to the press because that would generate the ammount of smear that the Libs wanted. Funny thing is, for all the bitching and howling of "rightious indignation" about this gang molls untrustworthy nature, who's the one doing business with her now? She didn't do this for free so did the liberal party pay her or is she going to run as a candidate?
