$1:
UCP MLA Devinder Toor fined $15K by Elections Alberta

Devinder Toor, United Conservative MLA for Calgary-Falconridge, has been fined $15,000 by Elections Alberta for violations both as a nomination candidate and as a candidate in the 2019 provincial election.

According to Elections Alberta, Toor faces the following charges for his time as a provincial candidate:

Accepting a prohibited contribution from a corporation of which he was a director, in the form of use of property.
Exceeding expense limits.
Filing a false financial statement with the chief electoral officer.
Borrowing money from a "party other than a financial institution."
Failing to deposit contributions into the account on record with the chief financial officer.

Prior to the election, as Toor fought to become the UCP candidate in the northeast Calgary riding, Elections Alberta says he committed the following violations:

A person other than his chief financial officer accepted donations.
Accepting a prohibited contribution from a corporation of which he was a director, in the form of use of property.
Exceeding expense limits.
Filing a false financial statement with the chief electoral officer.
Failing to deposit contributions into the account on record with the chief financial officer.

Toor narrowly won his seat in 2019, besting the NDP contender, Parmeet Singh Boparai, by 91 votes. The tight race required a judicial recount.

. . .

"Mr. Toor must resign, and Jason Kenney needs to eject him immediately from the government caucus for this corrupt behaviour," said NDP Deputy Leader Sarah Hoffman in a news release.

"This is not a simple mistake. These are willful, deliberate breaches of election laws that call into question Mr. Toor's integrity, and his ability to hold the public's trust. Albertans should be outraged at this level of sleaziness and corruption in Jason Kenney's UCP caucus."

The UCP caucus has not yet responded to requests for comment.

. . . but he remains a UCP member.

Thanos Thanos:
Now we're attracting them to come here from all over the country, or encouraging them in their own home territory to behave like our worst do here in Alberta. This is what happens when the extreme side of ideology basically takes over an entire province like Alberta's been by the alt-right, the shitbirds flock here like cheap metal to a magnet:

$1:
Charges have been laid against a Toronto man for posting photos of the Alberta judge who recently convicted four anti-mask, COVID-19-denying men who repeatedly breached public health restrictions and judges' orders.

This is the second-known breach of judges' privacy in as many weeks. It follows news earlier this month that lawyers with the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms had Manitoba Chief Justice Glenn Joyal — who is presiding over a court challenge related to the province's lockdown measures — followed both to his home and cottage.

Court of Queen's Bench Justice Adam Germain has been tasked with handling all Alberta pandemic-related breaches of judges' orders. The aim is to control repeat offenders who refused to abide by public health restrictions and encouraged others to follow along.

Donald Smith, an anti-mask, pandemic-denying supporter of Calgary mayoral candidate Kevin J. Johnston, admitted in court Tuesday that he took pictures of Germain as well as Alberta Health Services (AHS) lawyer Mark Jackson.

He was charged with contempt of court.

The images were screen grabbed during virtual court hearings hosted on WebEx, video-conferencing software similar to Zoom. At the beginning of all hearings, Germain issued warnings that no images or recordings were to be captured during the court sessions.

"Crooked #LiberalCalgaryJudge/Former MLA making is decision on Calgary mayoral candidate Kevin J. Johnston on Friday to see if Kevin gets out of jail," wrote Smith on June 28.

"I know posting this picture of the judge can land me in hot water but I really do not care because its time to expose these crooked judges for what there doing."

The contempt charges are for both taking and posting the photos and for allegedly recording the proceedings and posting non-certified transcriptions.

And of course he has the face of a person who'd probably love to drive a vehicle at full speed down a crowded sidewalk. Go fucking figure. Five years in prison, minimum, for these sorts of assholes from now on.

'Ole Donald was a former Calgary Resident who like to "Charter Check" Police and Security. The guy was a real piece of work.

Alberta to remove most COVID-19 isolation, testing requirements by mid-August

I know I posted this in the COVID thread, but I'm posting it here too because #AlbertaisFloridaofCanada trended on social media today because of this decision.

Sigh...

Kenney is jealous that the US is having their successful fourth wave, and now he wants one.

Did Kenney write that speech for Hinshaw yesterday, or was she just forced to write it?

Listening to a Noon Alberta wide call-in show; people are pissed about dropping of covid restrictions, and have lost all confidence in Dr. Hinshaw. 8O

And one who said this was an infectious disease researcher at the UofA.

Kenney outraged over Trudeau's Senate appointment as Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen appointed as independent

And there is the great big 'fuck you' for your Senate election. Kenney can be as pissed as he wants, but that is the constitutional right of the PM.

Good for Trudeau to stick his thumb right in the eye of our discount-bin Napoleon of a leader with this maneuver. R=UP

Alt-right (most likely) strikes, sets fire to makeshift memorial to residential school victims outside of Calgary city hall:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/ ... -1.6129871

$1:
A memorial honouring residential school victims at Calgary City Hall was set on fire Tuesday night.

Police say that just before 11:30 p.m. MT, city corporate security saw closed-circuit video of a man trying to light the memorial on fire before fleeing the area.

Police and firefighters arrived to find shoes and other objects at the memorial heavily damaged.

"We are very aware of the current tensions in the community around residential schools and the acts of vandalism and arson that have been occurring. We will examine whether there is any connection in this case, but we are asking people in the meantime to be patient while we work to identify the suspect," police said in a release.

Find him and there'll be no doubt that his internet history will be full of the usual phrases and searches typical of those who think that fascism or open Nazism is great and needs to be brought back. We'll never be free of these rotten bastards, will we? Especially in Alberta because it's been allowed to fester for too long, if not tactically used by certain politicians and movements on the right for their own disgusting purposes.

Sigh. :|

Parts of controversial Alberta UCP labour law remain in limbo

A new law that requires workers to opt into paying union dues to political campaigns or charity donations remains inactive more than a year after legislators approved it.

Two independent MLAs who were removed from the government caucus earlier this year drew attention to the issue on Wednesday, alleging the delay is allowing unions to influence elections scheduled for October.

Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes said the United Conservative Party government's delays could see union members' dues flowing to third-party advertiser campaigns for city council or school board candidates they oppose.

"As broken promises go, this is a big one," Barnes said at a news conference. "For far too long, union members have been forced to fund political spending for candidates and causes they personally disagree with, or even oppose."

Central Peace-Notley MLA Todd Loewen said he worries union-funded campaigns will influence a referendum on whether Albertans support the principle of equalization. That question, along with a referendum on daylight saving time and senator elections are all on the municipal election ballot set for Oct. 18.

. . .

The Alberta Federation of Labour said it plans to challenge the law in court, once proclaimed, including the sections on union dues.

NDP labour and immigration critic Christina Gray said employers are telling her the new rules are cumbersome.

"What we're seeing is the UCP government is interested only in suppressing the voices of working people," she said.
