Waaaaaaa, to bad. Cunsult the Inuit, we do not care about your comments or opinions. You should be using the animal for it's meat not for the almighty $. It is an endangered animal, you should not be able to harvest any of these creatures.

Narwhal's are not endangered. That being said, if the Inuit are selling the tusks of whales harvested for food, I have no problem with that. If they are harvesting them for the tusks, then that is a problem.

Problem is how do you tell the difference? What if they were hunting them to export the meat and the tusks?

What's the difference between harvesting animals for tusks or for pelts?

That is... narwhals vs seals

Do they really collect all the seal meat to eat?
What about the baby seal hunt?

Not much of a difference between harvesting the meat to feed your family and selling the tusk to feed your family.

I wonder if the first settlers ate the beaver meat when they trapped them for the fur. :?

...damn it, now the thread will turn into an "eating beaver" discussion. 8O

Which is the food source, which is the ornament in Raydan's question? You're not saying the Newfies are hunting seals for food, are you? Slap a ban on seal pelts and see how happy they would be then. How many of them do you think would be out on the ice just so they can have some flipper pie?

Plenty of Newfies eat seal. When I was in Labrador seal was definitely on the menu in a lot of people's houses. As was caribou, moose and partridge. Ever been to NFLD andy?

I know they eat seal. But they wouldn't be out there in big ships harvesting so many if the pelts were worthless. As I said, you who's been everywhere and knows everything, ban the use of seal pelts and see how many of them go on the ice just for the meat. Better get ear plugs tho, the howling would rise to the heavens.

andy, I've been to NFLD often, and I lived in Labrador for three years.

I try to subscribe to the line of thought that just because I haven't been there or seen it doesn't make me an expert.

I have seen the locals go and hunt seal in Goose Bay and in Bonavista for the meat but you seem to doubt that's their purpose;

But then, you probably know all about the local NFLD culture even though you've never been there. I try to comment on things I have some knowledge on. The stuff I don't know I leave alone. Try it sometime.

Ah, Brock, your usual black and white thinking. Maybe read my posts again - I said they wouldn't go out in huge numbers to hunt seal for meat only. And the point of my post was they would scream just as loudly as the natives is seal pelts were banned. The primary purpose of the seal hunt is for the pelts.

Did you not doubt that Newfies would eat seal? Black and white would be the black words you posted saying that on a white background.
