This is where that stimulus money from last year should have gone.

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Hmph. I've already commented on this topic on another thread. What a sad day for Canada.

With our massive coastline and with the Arctic heating up, Canada should make like WWII and get herself the third largest navy in the world. With Afghanistan ending soon for us and since we're NOT going to the Congo, the focus on the military should be switched to the navy and the air force.

That pretty much sums it up.

stokes stokes:
I work in recruiting for the military, and no one wants the Navy jobs we have more than 500 available for this year, in comparison we had 190 crewman positions and they were gone before the first of may. There is something very seriously wrong here

This is not good. 500 positions you can't fill? In your opinion stokes, why are these positions so undesirable? And why in comparison was it easier to fill the crewman positions?

I guess the Arctic is up for grabs then. With virtually no ships or personnel to man them anyway there will be little Canada can do.

I'm going to play devils advocate here.... the article says it all, you don't have the sailors or the money you don't man the ships. Sad fact is the average Canadian does not support a MASSIVE increase in military spending and until that happens this is going to occur.

The toughest thing is that the Army has been in the news for the last 8 years due to Afghanistan. a lot of young men see "glory" in the combat arms trades, too many WWII movies or something.

By comparison the Navy does not get advertised to the same degree, while most of us here are well informed about most topics, the same can not be said for public in general.

I'll put my recruiter hat on

The Navy has a massive subsidized education program in which 20% of the available positions are for post-secondary education at an accredited college/ university, you give us 5 years and you walk away with a diploma in mechanical or electronic engineering.

So true, for the first time in years Infantry and Combat Engineer are closed for new applicants. As a matter of fact they are now opening up a new transfer program for trained Cpl/Pte in the infantry to leave the trade as we are over manned (on paper and in the training system). The trades they are trying to get us to go into... mainly tech and Navy trades.

Interesting, this story has been pulled down from all the Canwest sites.

Just another sad chapter in the non-partisan neglect of the CF.

Sure it has. Too many people are saying WTF?? instead of cheering on the disarmament that the media tends to favor.

Hey Stokes, My old man was a recruiter here in Calgary out of the HMCS Tecumseh, he has since reupped to reg force and is posted to the Regina (it's in refit now so he's switching ships in June)
I myself never pursued a military career though I have alot of respect and pride in all aspects of out forces, now I'm 32, married and have 2 kids, My Dad convinced me to join up at Tecumseh as it was an idea I had been flirting with for about a year anyway.
I had a stroke of bad luck though as my work won't hold my job for the 8 weeks required for training, so I'm explorign other options now.
I myself have been surrounded by Navy folks all my life and it's a shame that such a proud and historic aspect of our military is going to shit because of pollitical neglect.

If this lack of interest and support in the Navy by the Canadian Public and Ottawa continues they may as well just tie up every ship except two. Then rename them Niobe and Rainbow and go back to square one and start all over again.

It's a sad state of affairs when a country the size of Canada can't man the small ammount of ships that we have. I would have thought more people would be considering a career in the miltiary with economy being the way it is.
