Why are people so shocked that someone in a blood sport would act as if he was in a blood sport?

That's a cop out and excusing poor behaviour and the lack of principle and honour he showed. Even in war, where the enemy is trying to kill you, humanity designed the Geneva Conventions to guide how the enemy should be treated.
The thing to me here is that the very people who typically mock and ridicule notions of principle, virtue, and honor are the same ones who are
SHOCKED!! that this guy doesn't display any.
I don't know if I am shocked, I leave that disbelief for the Canadian Security apparatus and how they choose to stab Americans and their businesses in the back via this unethical trash. It is shocking that Canadian police care little about Canadas reputation or the harm we do to America and our other close allies.
What this MMA fighter did just illustrates a disgusting lack of character. Quite frankly, considering the risk both combatants face, it is a bit odd as he opens himself up to distrust in the future which probably leads to him getting an extra dose of abuse without reservation.
For instance, next time he might be down on the mat and vulnerable, when the ref comes in to break up the beating his opponent will choose to continue hard on him "just in case" this guy gets an opening. One of the powerful incentives for the Geneva Convention isn't just that it is humane in the most inhumane activities; that of war, but also for the fact that YOU might be the guy captured.
