Make it’s desgned well too because it looks like this is the culprit: poor design choices.

^^ our system is designed so that there is a separate 'training' system that does not connect to real world ENDECs, so that kind of mistake can't happen.

More expensive in terms of licensing, but less public trauma when I issue alerts for central Alberta that 'Brah is triggered, beware exploding heads'. ;)

Yeah, might be a good idea to put those two options on separate drop-down tabs.

There is no 'oops' button. You can't take back an alert sent to cell phones, radio or TV. All you can do is issue another alert, and depending on how the system is built, you might not be able to edit that alert before it gets sent. Best you could hope for in that circumstance is a pre-built "all clear" alert.

The one for "Missile alert" should also have a pop-up that asks "Are you 100% sure you want to select this option?"

Followed by "are you really sure about this?", then "are you really, Really, REALLY sure?", then one more time with "Alrighty then - MAGA!".

We had a big air raid siren within sight of our house when I was a kid and I remember the WWII veteran parents all around us freezing and blanching when they tested it. The Brit war bride mother of one my classmates went to pieces. I guess that she had an authentic case of PTSD.

One by our school. Was in Grade 2 during Cuban missile crisis and even walking to school in Grade 12 kids would all go to the other side of the street and back again to avoid being near the goddam thing.
And I remember the drills. Little kids running home terrified. Nobody should have to go through that shit ever again.

Yeah it's not like Bill Clinton handed North Korea their nuclear program on a silver platter and Trump inherited the kicked can from previous administrations.

I was a couple of years younger but I remember my siblings being drilled on getting under their desks! I remember my parents as being really uptight, even though I was only six at the time. The funny thing is that we have come a lot closer to nuclear annihilation since then and didn't really know it such as during the You Kippur war when the Israelis came within a hair width of defeat by the Syrians. They sure as hell weren't going to let themselves be pushed into the Sea without nuking Damascus, Cairo, Beirut, Amann, etc.etc.

Not even that far back. I think it was 94 and the US launched a satellite into a northern orbit over Russia. For whatever reason, the Russian NORAD didn’t get the word like they’re supposed to and freaked out thinking it was an incoming ICBM. Fortunately for the world, Yeltsin was likely too drunk to react quickly and a sharp duty officer decided to wait and see where the rocket was headed before freaking out like everyone else.

In Slovakia, they still have the tests of their system, air raid sirens straight
out of WWII. Last Friday of every month, at 11am.

Spooky as hell to listen to, like being inside a war film.
