Lucy DeCoutere says she has resigned from the Trailer Park Boys just hours after one of its principal actors denied assaulting a woman in the U.S.
DeCoutere, who co-stars in the show, testified against Jian Ghomeshi in the former CBC hosts highly-publicized sexual assault trial.
Mike Smith, known for playing Bubbles on the cult comedy show, was charged with a misdemeanour in Los Angeles on Friday.
DeCoutere tweeted about her resignation, and a post on her Twitter account said it was linked with the allegation against Smith, adding she had spoken with both her co-star and the alleged victim.
Los Angeles police records show Smith was arrested early Friday morning, and has been released on $20,000 bail.
Police havent released details of the charge against Smith, but the show has issued a news release in which Smith denies assaulting a woman.
At no time did I assault her. I am not guilty of the misdemeanour charged against me, Smith says in the written statement, adding the woman he is accused of assaulting is a friend of his.
The statement also included quotes from the alleged victim saying police were called by others not present in the room who mistakenly perceived the argument to be something other than what it was, and there was no real issue.
Smith will return to a L.A. court on April 29 to face the charge.
DeCoutere did not immediately respond to a request for an interview to elaborate on the reasons behind her Twitter announcement. A few hours before announcing her resignation, DeCoutere tweeted, If I find out that somebody is abusive, I cut them out of my life. Its very easy.
Ghomeshi was acquitted on all charges of sexual assault and choking last month. Justice William Horkins said he could not rely on the testimony from the three Ghomeshi complainants, including DeCoutere, who agreed to be publicly identified.
The Ghomeshi case has generated an intense national debate on how Canadas justice system deals with abuse complainants.
The tenth season of Trailer Park Boys recently debuted on Netflix.

$1: The statement also included quotes from the alleged victim saying police were called by others not present in the room who mistakenly perceived the argument to be something other than what it was, and there was no real issue. So just like some jurisdictions in Canada the Crown or in this case the District Attorney lays the charges and the fact whether there was an assault of not is of no consequences. Another question. I knew the Air Force was fucking slack but, could someone explain to me how Lucy was getting all this time off to act in the series. I guess it's a new and kinder military where your outside interests take precedence over your obligations and commitments to your country. Besides, the Air Force really doesn't need another Captain standing around with their hands in their pockets. To be honest her quitting the show likely has more to do with embarrassing the Air Force than her sticking up for assault victims who apparently weren't.

Lucy's pretty righteous for someone who got exposed last week as a liar in a major court case. I liked her better when I thought her character on the show was made up and wasn't her in real life. Wonder if she'll meet Bubs in a park to give him a hate-fuck a couple of weeks from now and then go "and NOW we're through". Because, y'know, victims sometimes do mysterious things and all. Her twitter feed has generated some interesting traffic today. https://twitter.com/lucydecoutere?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Love this one from Lucy. $1: If I find out that somebody is abusive, I cut them out of my life. It's very easy. I guess that philosophy didn't apply to English born, former radio hosts with a penchant for non-consensual rough sex with sex partners. But the comments on her account get even better and here's my favorite from a Tom Mulcair. $1: I believe strongly in the presumption of innocence and the right to a strong defence but I also believe survivors. WTF does that exactly mean? Talk about the proverbial politician speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

If only you had done that with Jian, your charges would have gone somewhere Lucy but you didn't.

‘Trailer Park Boys’ star Mike Smith’s alleged battery victim slams police, says she was never in danger$1: By Meera Jagannathan
The woman allegedly throttled in a bathroom Friday by “Trailer Park Boys” star Mike Smith says she was never in danger — and that police mishandled her supposed assailant’s arrest.
“Mike and I did indeed have a heavy argument but it saddens me the way things are being reported and the way it was handled by the police,” Georgia Ling said Saturday in a joint statement issued by the cult-hit mockumentary.
“At no point did I feel I was in danger, otherwise I would've called the police myself, which I did not.”
Others present outside the room “mistakenly” grew concerned over Smith and Ling’s escalating quarrel, she added.
“When the officers arrived I tried to assure them there was no real issue, but they proceeded to arrest Mike,” the woman said.
The Canadian-born actor, who was arrested at 1:15 a.m. Friday on a domestic battery charge, similarly denied the allegations in the statement.
“Georgia is a friend of mine and we had a loud and heated dispute. That is all,” said the 43-year-old. “At no time did I assault her. I am not guilty of the misdemeanour (sic) charged against me.”
Smith, who plays Bubbles on the TV series, had gotten into an altercation with the woman later identified as Ling inside a bathroom at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, sources told the Daily News on Friday. Their disagreement apparently stemmed from text messages the actor had sent.
Bystanders heard the woman holler, “You’re choking me,” a source told The News.
Upon entering the room, witnesses allegedly found Smith pinning the woman against a bathroom wall before she emerged with a ripped shirt and no pants.
Smith apparently fled the scene, but police arrested him after he returned to the room as they were interviewing the woman.
He was later released on $20,000 bail, according to jail records. The actor is scheduled to appear in court April 29.
