Apparently it's only in the Primaries where you have to "party vote" unless it's an open primary then if you're not registered with the party you're still able to vote for a candidate.
As for Federal Elections, you can vote for whom ever you want no matter what party they belong to. Besides it's a secret ballot so nobody would know if a Democrat voted Republican or vice versa.
