Ok, when it comes to hockey I just have not got this Canadian thing sussed.

How come they are the richest and best supported team in the NHL yet they seem to be less than successful?

I’m not trying to take the piss here but I can’t see why people fork out hundreds of dollars to watch a team that hasn’t really done well for a long time.

Am I missing something about the Canadian psyche here?

well said EyeBrock!!!

IF an auto company produced an inferior product then it would not sell. The incentive would then be for the auto company produce a better car...

IF ABC or NBC produced a crappy sitcom that few watched, the network would then have to produce a better sitcom...

Only in TO and NY (Rangers) will they support mediocre hockey teams... At the start of HNIC's broadcast last Saturday (Leafs vs Rangers) the announcer alluded to the fact that these were the two most viable hockey markets in North America...

They're called "fans". Short for "fanatics". And they're don't jump on bandwagons. You're telling me legions of fans haven't supported their English football teams despite some less then successful seasons.

I was one for MUFC!
They were shite when I was watching them in the mid 1980's but after 4 years of winning sweet FA, they started to win everything.
They are still doing well.
But in the bad times there was a huge groundswell of crticism and the fans started to stay away. Things changed.

I just don't see the same kind of vast paradigm shift with the Leafs. It seems that you guys will pay the rather large ticket price regardless.

No wonder they didn't want the guy from RIM bringing a team to Hamilton. He might have won a Stanley Cup in a couple of years.

Well attendance in other NHL Canadian cities drops off when the team is lethargic. Do you not remember when the Flames used to drape off their upper bowl because attendance was poor? Even Les Habs crowds drop off....

Well...the Leafs draw because they're part of Canadiana. Just ask Roch Carrier - that work defines the Leafs and Habs as a component of our culture.

As i've said before, fans are frustrated and you'll notice none of the bashers here have offered anything even remotely "hockey-based" to criticize Burke or his recent moves.

It's also part of Canadian hockey culture to bash the Leafs, but you'll notice that they also sell out any Canadian team's building when they play. I guess those "fans" aren't voting with their wallets either.

The short answer is a horrible lack of skill and hockey knowledge in the front office. There's been a string of General Managers who were hired because they were friends of either the owner or someone on the board of directors and/or upper management. The result has been 20 years of horrible draft picks, horrible trades and horrible free-agent aquisitions while, simultaneously, trading draft picks and bleeding dry any talent in the system at the 'prospect' level.

I don't. I'm neither a Leafs fan nor an NHL fan. I'll casually watch some playoff hockey at the pub or a buddy's house, but that's it. I ref OHA and OMHA hockey so I see enough of the game up close. If I feel like going to watch a game, I'll go see an OHL game...GO PETES GO!!!

Ok Lemmy, why are the Leafs the most financially successful team in the NHL?

I know why MUFC is the most successful pro team in the world. I'm just at a loss to see why the Leafs get so much cash.

I offer no opinion on how to improve the Leafs 'cause I don't want them to improve...I love it when they lose... It gives me comic levity and kind of makes my day whenever the Make Me Laughs do not win..... :D :D :D :D :D
