The reactions to Mr C's comment "silly campaign of profit and all that exploitative nonsense" seems a little strong. In his defence he also stated he participates in Halloween, Christmas and Easter it is just the commercialism he laments. I am sure all of us at one time or another have made a statement along the same line. It is not that we do not want to give it is the emphasis that we may comment on as being different from when we were younger. For example I can remember my father and mother making us some items as well as the store bought gifts. Liked them just as well. That is different than the periodic craze of the must have item of the year and the lengths some individuals would go to obtain them for their child.
And God knows if you don't get it, your kid will be a "loser" and you'll be a bad parent :?

As a curiosity does anyone know why we have Boxing Day? Can you answer without googling it?

Yep, it's the day you get to don gloves and punch the people that gave you crappy gifts

I fell asleep on the couch at about 6PM on Halloween and didn't wake up until 10:30. Didn't even hear the doorbell ring or anything. Now stuck with about a hundred mini-chocolate bars to consume. Kinda embarassing when I think about it.

The sugar addiction is too strong though. The reason I passed out on the couch in the first place was because of the sugar high-the-crash that previous snacking on the candy caused. 8O

Fun addiction though. Way more satisfying and less painful than being a borderline drunk ever was. 8)

I don't know why he needs defending. I think he's right, and if were to choose not to participate in those holidays, that's his right and nobody can tell him different.

Actually, I think Christmas and all that is a VERY good excuse to postpone my kids nagging to. "Mom, I want a Wii." "Mom, I want skeelers" "Mom, I want..."

Standard answer? "It's almost Christmas." Works better than "No".

Nobody is telling him different. It's the innuendo that under his ideology that he'd like to impose, he would change it.

Don't worry, under him, you still can sit around in your underwear lamenting how whitey is being screwed over by immigrants and Indians, Andy.

This year I was home by accident for my new towns Trick or Treating. Kids kept coming so I had a 5 pack of Winterfresh gum in my pantry and put them in a bowl with a "please take one". I then pretended not to be home and hid.

I feel like an ass, but I had nothing

All the major holidays seem more commercial to me now than when I was growing up. At times it can seem like the reason for the event is lost in the run to the store.

Yes I can. Boxing day is the day after Christmas where in the Good old days when nobles gave ver expensive Christmas gifts to each other the next day they would give the boxes to the servants. The boxes weren't the cheap shit we have today they were worth something sometimes quite a bit.

Give the man a prize! In the boxes would be food, clothing and other goods the noble felt his servants/serfs needed. In medieval times Christmas was more of a religous event and the day after was for sharing with those less fortunate in honour of Christ's examples. This is the most popular explanation for the day, but the true meaning of Boxing Day has been lost to time. Another popular explanation was in later days (eg 1700's) Christmas was still the religous holiday and the following day was for gifts that were given in decorated boxes.

It is a holiday that Canadians have adopted from our British ancestors. Unfortunately for our friends south of the border the US has not seen the need for a holdiay after Christmas day so you do not have the day after Christmas to recover and eat leftovers.

I'm proud to carry on that tradition...
