This will cost them a fortune...and even worse, it could make the Japanese future competitors for fighter aircraft sales.

I think they just want to be able to defend themselves from China. Couple this article with their PM's recent statement that Japan may not have nuclear weapons but could readily produce them and it looks like they're telling China to behave.

And the comment from a Japanese Army General last year when China was sabre rattling at Japan:

"The Imperial Japanese Army still knows its way around China."

That was my #1 favorite comment of last year!

By all means let's have the Japanese produce and aggressively market military aircraft.

The Americans need a real competitor to their overpriced crap and I can't think of anyone better than the Japanese to provide it.

Toyota Aerospace, anyone?

Overpriced crap, eh?

Tell me, then, what would you feel safe in going up against an F-22 that you can't see on radar and is visible on IR only if you're parked on its tailpipe?

XD ROTFL

One only has to make a comparison between American and Japanese cars, for example.

It's funny cause a friend of mine, which is completely sold on Chevy, used to argue a bit on US vs Japan built cars. I had a Mistubishi Eclipse and he had a Chevy Truck. There is no comparison. Japanese cars are so much better equipped and reliable.

Plus all the money spent on union workers in Detroit, at least the Japanese can afford to put all that extra money towards the components. Therefore make a better car.

The auto industry analogy is interesting.

If, and it's a very big if, the Japanese decided to do to the Americans in aerospace what they did to them in the automotive sector I have little doubt that they could take it to the Yanks and eventually claim a big chunk of the market - who knows, maybe they could even come to dominate it.

It would be fascinating to watch them try.

American crap,

Sorry, but as a guy who has faced the nasty effects of combat, I will go into danger in almost any American peice of kit. They have the best equip in the world, with few exceptions.....

I find it interesting that they compare cars to kits that soldiers have to count on....to save their lives...

I'm sure this is purely a negotiation tactic. America will want to keep them from actually developing this thing, so in 2 years we will find out that the program has been canceled and the US has decided to sell them F-22's.
