I've never really hunted, except for birds, but on the farm now, we have to slaughter animals. it's way harder than I thought it would be. The chickens and turkeys are easy, but I had a hard time with the killing of the pigs (they were a friend's pigs, actually, we were helping them out). There was one zombie pig, and I'm stuck with that image in my head. We've got an old horse that may not last the winter, and may have to shoot him too. Just part of life--and death--in the country I guess.

When I worked at Gainers slaughterhouse, pigs were always the worst. They are smart, and know what it coming. :( Most accept their fate, but some choose the fight option. That is absolutely horrible, and why I don't each much meat. The 'one bad day' option is far preferable to the factory farm concentration camps.

That's it exactly. Those pigs were happy, well-fed, well-exercised and cared for until the "big day." I guess I'll get used to it. I'd like to get to the point where the only meat I eat is from local small farms. And local trout. I rarely eat salmon now--it's a real treat, not a staple like it used to be.

I think if you have to raise or catch or hunt, slaughter and process the food you eat, the more you respect it.

A nutritionist I recall says that he'll let you eat all the pie and cookies and ice cream you want to, but you have to make the pie and make the cookies and make the ice cream. From scratch. Most people wouldn't bother any more. Preprocessed foods have changed the way people look at food.

Me too...but I haven't yet found the right combo of quality, quantity and price. So far, what I've found is either way too expensive and/or way too much meat (half a pig or cow for example).

But I'm trying hard on the local trout aspect - who knows, maybe one day I'll actually catch a trout or two on my fishing trips with my kids.

I'd be happy to talk trout fishing on PM with you and discuss lures and other things :D
