Why "Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work shall set you free") at the entrance of this camp? Because it is the easiest way to trick someone to enter a place from where s/he will never get out.
It was all part of the mind game that the Nazi's played with their captors to lower the chance of resistance. It is the same as having them label their luggage before they leave it behind before they get on the train to go to the camps. Or how the paths leading to the gas chambers were often lined with magnificently manicured gardens. A calm mob is easily controlled because remember, the prisoners outnumbered their gaurds many times over.
What I want to stress here is that: If the motto would have been "A vacation camp that will free you", the most anxious Jews would have probably resist a little bit more at the entrance gate.
