As an artist who does not understand math I do know I'd want at least $10,000,000. for said painting.

I didn't realize uwish was an artist Why am I working in -80 and slogging around in the mud when I can just go smear some shit on a wall or drink blood from a vial stuck in my anus, call it art and apply for a grant? Seem's like a few people on here want to see the funding left in place for this.

Most artists plagiarize each other, surely we do not need funding for that?

PluggyRug PluggyRug: Most artists plagiarize each other, surely we do not need funding for that? You are right pluggs, I can prove that all writers today use a lot of the words that other writers use. I mean, really.... I was reading a novel just last week and the same words were in it as were in a novel I read two weeks ago. Now thats plagiarism!

By the way, for all those who are not fans of government support for artists, how about government support for sports.

With windchill,it was a record and my beard froze to my sleeping bag that night and I bailed and ran for the kitchen where the heater allways works. I dont think it's got colder then -50 ambient anywhere in Canada since they have been keeping records(since 1943)

lily lily: RUEZ RUEZ: Reverend Blair Reverend Blair: What happened to his ideals, Ruez? Where are the Conservatives who loved his attacks on the arts? What about the ideals of any politician that changes a policy due to voter persuasion? Isn't this the definition of democracy? The voters have told Harper they were unhappy with his policies and eventually he changed them. Would you rather have him flip the artists the bird and say tough? Forget it, you will disagree with anything the Conservatives do. Funny - it's called a flip flop when a Lib does it. DOes anyone have any idea how much Voice of Fire would sell for now? No idea,( what is 1.8 million in 2008 dollars?)but I think we should sell it to the next sucker, er art afficianado. I don't have a problem with the government buying art, but 1.8 million? Come on. I would give that guy whatever the cost of material plus about 10 dollars an hour for time. Probably took him 3 hours to put that together.

fifeboy fifeboy:
Art, either you get it or you don't. If a line like this scares you into thinking that questioning the value of abstract art might make you less intelligent than the other people around you who do "get it", then I have a great deal in a used car for you.

I always think back to when Chretien promised the Canadian NHL team about 5 million to help them out. Turns out that was quite an unpopular decision and Chretien changed his mind. I don't think anyone called Chretien a flip flopper.

This thread reminds me of another art uproar, I think it was in the 80's. Didn't the public pay for some big statue that looked like a giant vagina? The Red Trench or something?
