I can certainly imagine that if the police won't then others will take things into their own hands. And I doubt that those will be the most qualified or restrained hands. Things could get real ugly real quick.

Yeah. I don't think there's much validity for downplaying the scenario at all. Young, angry, unemployed, and a culture relying heavy on victimhood. A glance over at some of the actions of youth in Greece, Spain, and France, demonstrate what could occur with the addition of a hamstrung police and military.

I can certainly imagine that if the police won't then others will take things into their own hands. And I doubt that those will be the most qualified or restrained hands. Things could get real ugly real quick.

One would hope that irrespective of the potential negative optics the media and pundits could play up if police and or military roll in to sort out an issue, there would be a realization that almost anything the government did would be hands down better than what locals with a head of steam might do.

If legitimate protest activities do descend into widespread violence, destruction, and economic disruption (domestic terrorism?) I expect the federal government to handle the situation just as they would any other major threat to our national security and use any means in its power to identify, contain, and eliminate that threat.

I will say that all levels of government have typically fallen short of what I expect of them.

I suspect it would go much further than it should before enough voters lost their "noble savage" delusions and started to back harsher measures. Large segments of society would have to start feeling the pain of blockades and vandalism before they accepted that terrorism is terrorism, no matter who it comes from or what their justification.
