I gave my personal opinion, but that's all it is - my personal opinion. I'm looking for a rational justification, otherwise it's no different than a religious person who says their beliefs deserve a 'special dignity'.

My rational explantion is that a funeral is ultimately someones last event on earth. To me its like defacing a gravestone. We would certainly punish people spray-painting swasticas on jewsih gravestones wouldn't we?

To me its similiar. A funeral isn't the place for such a protest and using the law to enforce certain dignities doesn't impede on the idea or rights of free speech.

I think that's certainly a more modern approach. The spectacles of public executions would have argued otherwise in the past.

Or would differentiate between death and burial in this case?

Thats very reasonable. A funeral is never a place for any political or religious statement of any kind. I'd have no problem with a law banning any such actions at such an event.
Why though? I could protest outside the local Baptist Church on Sunday if I was so inclined, and that would be just as distasteful for those attending the service. Why should funerals be deemed out of bounds?

I personally feel it's out of bounds, but again, I'm just searching for some rational justification if it were to be officially implemented.

Just to point out, I don't think the Baptist church likes these guys either.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Honestly, I would be HAPPY if what happened to Tim McLean happened to the entire cult of the Phelps.

"Oh, Mr_C! That's cold! That's mean! Don't joke about that!"

READ WHAT THESE FUCKERS DO. These people do not deserve to live.

"Freedom of Speech". Freedom to fucking DIE already.

I'm sorry. But these people really piss me off. I'm waiting for someone to fire a rocket into their little home.

Anything that happens to those delusional fucking brainwashed retards to waaaaaaaaaaaay to good for them.

The Phelps group protested at the funeral for Matthew Sheppard, they protest at the funerals of U.S. Soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq..

There's a group who follows this Phelps group and confronts them at every protest so this group might follow the Phelps group into Canada..

There'll be no problem finding family members to deal with anyone who tries to disrupt the service.

Yes that would be the difference. The burial and/or funeral is different then say witnessing an execution in the states although a case might be made for people about to be executed by the state be granted that right.

I'm referring more to the very public executions of the 19th century - with the food vendors and hawkers warming the crowd before the very expected last words and then the excitement of the hanging.

I think this would be a good time for our border guards to use their power to deny entry to Canada on these "people".

Fred Phelps has been denied entry into Canada before and probably will be again. I think they confiscated a bunch of their nazi literature at the border too.
