It was automation, I know
that was what was making the factories go...

Thanos Thanos:
Pretty odd then that 30000 people from an allegedly "healthy" economic sector are going to be losing their jobs.

Is 30,000 another one of your nuggets of 'truth'? The union likes to tell us that each job represents 9 spin-off jobs but long gone are the days where every supplier and such are tied only to GM itself.

Oshawa is still growing and a vibrant City despite GM shrinking by 93% over the last number of years.

The Chrysler and GM bailouts were still the right thing to do because they were "Too Big To Fail" as the World was on the brink of a Global economic collapse.

Most of Oshawa is kind of a shithole. Dirty factory town, downtown is all slummy and rundown, the waterfront is all warehouses and scrapyards and abandoned industrial properties, there’s barely a blade of grass to be seen anywhere, and the people who live in the city centre match the surrounding scenery. It’s like Hamilton, typical rundown rustbelt town.

It's clear you haven't visited in quite a while. I live not far from Oshawa. About 20 minutes away. I'm in Oshawa often with the kids or for other errands.

Oshawa has come a long way. Are there shitty parts of Oshawa? Sure....but it's come a long way since the days of the Dirty 'Shwa.

Oshawa has done a great job at diversifying itself. With the new 407 running through, the University, etc....they'll be just fine.

It would be nice if the gov't and union could pressure GM into moving production of another model to Oshawa. Problem is: they don't have any!

I'd buy an Impala if I didn't have my truck. Maybe when I get so old I've got to move into an old sailors home I'll get one especially since Consumer Reports rates them as the best "large" car. Otherwise I'll stick with my GMC truck.

Most of the cars they produce in that plant, I almost never see on the road. When was the last time I saw a Cadillac sedan? An Impala? At the lights an hour ago, every vehicle was a pickup, except for one VW Golf TDI.

Ford did the same to me, I used to love driving the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Marauder. But they closed that plant in '05. And I wasn't gray haired enough to drive a Town Car. So I will stick to my Focus. My next car may even be a Tesla. And I'll always have a truck for the jobs only a truck can do.

Imagine if Tesla bought the Oshawa plant? 8)

That would be cool, maybe they'd finally meet demand!
Or Deng Foo or Glorious Chairman Motors, or some Japanese outfit who'd build small trucks again (not the one inch shorter same price 'mid range BS) to avoid the chicken tax.

Same here I need a truck so I have a truck. My wife keeps talking about getting another car but I just can't see spending the extra money on insurance and maintenance for something we only drive intermittently. Although, I loved driving the big highway cruisers when I was a kid. There's nothing like cruising down a prairie highway at 120 miles per hour and having the sensation of floating. [cheer]

As for Tesla buying the plant. That'd be great but at this point I'd be happy if they started making the Hyundai Pony there again.

At least that'd mean auto manufacturing jobs in a region that needs them.

Tesla is planning to build light trucks too. ;)

Anybody who owns a house there must have considerable equity built up?

My first car was a '75 Buick LeSabre, with the Olds 455 4-Barell in it.

You couldn't floor it with less than 1/4 tank, or the fuel pump would suck air as the fuel all sloshed to the back of the tank.

Good times! 8)

Living near Prince George, I've never seen a Chevy Volt in the dealer showroom or on the road. I read the City bought a Bolt, but never seen one of those, a Tesla, or a Nissan Leaf except on TV.
Yet ALL the taxis are Prius, and there's lots of those on the road here.

Perhaps I will see some EVs soon,
New vehicle sales to be 100 per cent zero-emission by 2040, under B.C.'s electrification plan
Under the new goals, by 2025, 10 per cent of new light-duty passenger vehicle sales in B.C. will be zero-emission vehicles, increasing to 30 per cent by 2030, and 100 per cent by 2040.

They also announced continued incentives for EVs and Hydrogen vehicles.

Most newer domestic vehicles in Calgary these days seem to be SUV/crossovers and trucks. Still lots of sedans but they're either Japanese or German, not North American. Must be a lot of money to be made in this town laying people off and selling businesses for scrap because there's definitely a fuck-ton of yuppies and other greasy slickster types driving around in high-end BMW and Audi sedans. Very few Caddy, Chevy, or Ford sedans anymore and even the Dodge Hemi models aren't as prevalant as they used to be about five to ten years ago.

It's a mindset everywhere.
This town's full of loaded $80K-$90K F350s on 7-8 year loans and the mills suffer shutdowns every 3 or 4 years. Shit if I was 30 I'd go train as a repo man and then get a job at one of the mills, I'd be set for life!
I didn't buy a pickup and I still regret it 7 or 8 times a year when I need lumber or drywall or a new appliance. I don't regret carrying a box full of ice and snow everywhere the other 160 odd times a year...

Based on Tesla's checkered history with the Model 3 and the EV semi, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a Tesla pick-up.
