It's part of the capital region sure, but ask anyone from either Edmonton or Spruce Grove and they'll say the same thing.
It goes the same for Sherwood Park, St Albert and Leduc too. Most residents of the surrounding bedroom communities are adamant that tgey do NOT live in Edmonton.
Same goes for people living in Airdrie, Brooks and Cochrane (they are not Calgary and either) - I don't know it must be an Alberta thing.
No one here says they're from Surrey when they're from Vancouver, and vice versa. If they go to Alberta or beyond tho, they would all say they're from Vancouver. See how that works?
Personally, I think that the difference is that there is little or no discernable distance between Vancouver and most of its suburbs, but in Alberta, almost all of the suburbs surrounding the major cities are physically separated by farmland and highway (Sherwood Park and St Albert being two notable exceptions).
Even in those cases, many residents are quick to point out they are not Edmontonians, even when traveling.
I doubt many people who live in Hope tell people they live in Vancouver.
