I have several cousins in Daytona Beach. One has been trapped inside of his house for days due to flooding. One has not been able to return to her house for days due to flooding. One had a tree fall on her house. Several cars total loss due to salt water submersion. No insurance company will repair a car once it has been exposed to salt water above the rocker panel.
All of them were born and raised in Daytona. A couple of them are in their 60's. Daytona is all that they have known. They have been through countless hurricanes through the years. No one thought that this one would be the one to take everything from them. We all thought that the west coast was going to bear the brunt of the storm. Hurricanes usually lose some strength when they pass over land. The irony is that they all live several miles inland away from the ocean and the storm surge. They still got flooded out. My one cousin who does live literally right on the beach in a condo has the least damage of them all. Her unit is up high away from the ground level and so is the parking garage. She can throw a rock from her balcony into the Atlantic Ocean. Loss of electricity for a couple of days, and some spoiled food was her only damages.
