QBall QBall:
I say take what you can get. It sucks but the Navy always plays third fiddle in the pecking order of the CF, so either bite the bullet or be prepared to start pulling miracles out of your ass to keep what you've got seaworthy.

Why build a real navy worthy of the name when you can just punt your littoral defense to the US taxpayer and then shift your naval defense budget to vote-buying social programs?

The only downside to that plan is that a US that is effectively in charge of Canada's defense can do grievous harm to Canada...by doing nothing at all.

There's a LCS Shipyard not far From Ontario in the UP/WI region. They would love to build the RCN Fleet with Ingalls Shipyards in MS. Then you get these bad boys, http://www.public.navy.mil/surfor/lpd20 ... a4eEkAQbao
http://www.public.navy.mil/SURFOR/LCS1/ ... a4eTkAQbao

Now If you need more money and such the CCG is ineffective and hates weapons cut them and transfer the duties to a new RCN Sqn with weapons authority. Please excuse me for that last comment. Two days ago at Corpus I booted a CCG Delegation home because they failed Piracy and security training with the MH65. Someone here was right they hate weapons and couldn't defend Canada out of a paper sack, I'm sorry but if they have that image and mindset they need to be axed and replaced.

LCS couldn't meet our requirements. We need frigates/destroyers, not an oversized corvette.

An amphib would be nice however.

The Canadian Coast Guard isn't a "coast guard" in the commonly accepted sense, in that they "guard" very little.

Their main role is taxing around researchers, breaking ice, and tending to navigation aids. They have SAR roles, but DND (not the CG) runs that pony show in the end.

Enforcement? Eww so icky! Leave that to the tough guys with guns.

When was the last our navy would have been able to take part in a combat roll? The first gulf war?
And before then?

Same time as the army.
Korea.

Just to be sure we are on the same page, are you saying that no land force element was sent into a situation the might have included combat after Korea and before the First Gulf War?

Take a look at RN history. That's exactly what a navy used to do. It meant more bang for the government buck.

I dunno. Is that the definition you want to use to cover CAF combat ops?
