The story doesn't say if the gun was registered.

WTF does the long arm registry have to do with handguns? Probably a gun smuggled across the border, since you guys are so keen to have any nutbar or dickhead be able to get one.

$1:
Palmeter said people should be careful if someone comes to the door claiming to be a police officer.
Oh sure, and the next time somebody won't let legitimate cops in he'll get himself beat down for his trouble.

Canadians don't need to register hand guns now? The RCMP had better update this site then.
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/restr-eng.htm

Have you ever tried buying a gun in the states? It usually involves a background check. The only people I've known to buy a gun and walk away with it on the same day are registered dealers.

Just go to a gun show, and away you go. A lot of our illegal guns come from across the line, since we're so much more stringent about handgun ownership. It actually works, and if you all did the same there would be a lot less guns on the street.

Do you ask if there was a background check on that handgun when one of your very frequent handgun murders takes place. And by implication, do you suggest they do away with background checks because there are so many illegal guns on the street anyway - just advocate no restrictions?

And no I haven't tried to buy a gun in the US, since that would be illegal.

You never know. There are well over 100,000 firearms(about half of which are handguns) floating around Canada that have been stolen from licenced owners.

Maybe hire some competent border agents?

Every time.

Not at all.

So? It's illegal to buy weed, and many Canadians still have done it.

I could say the same when Americans winge about BC bud going south.

Why?

So what's the point of the question?

Yeah, but not very many have gone to the US to buy it to smuggle it back across the border.

You could, and you would be right to do so.

Why not? Background checks are the law. The law should be enforced.

So what's the point of the question?

Handguns in Canada must be registered by law. If the handgun used was not registered, then the registration law is not being enforced. If the handgun was registered, then the background checks for registration are too lax.

Give it up. The law is enforced. Doesn't mean there are no illegal guns, same as in your country. Same with drugs, etc. And I seriously doubt these guys used a gun registered to themselves. But since the gun was not recovered, we may never know.

Wow, I expected a conversation relative to the article but guess that was too much to hope for.
Gun registry or not there will always be criminals in possession of guns (the majority of which are stolen from licensed/registered users), deal with it, I knew of a guy in high school that sold guns out of his trunk, all stolen.
I also have to wonder why they bothered mentioning the victims sexual orientation and the names of the witnesses they interviewed, I for one wouldn't want anyone publishing my name in relation to what I saw/heard durnign an incident like this one.
