What do you prefer... someone that can, but won't... or someone that can't, but tries?

Neither.

I prefer the second. Give me a student that struggles but puts his best effort into everything he does. You can keep the know-it-all who thinks that homework is below him.

Someone who misquotes a job, installs something in a dangerous way, or screws
up relations with a client can be more damaging than doing nothing.

Your first will spend his working life whining and complaining that it is
always some else's fault.

If you have the training budget, the second might be useful.
Easy when you are spending someone else's money.

Not so easy when it's yours.

The second always - provided he/she is willing to accept constructive criticism and training to prevent future screw-ups.

Depends on the situation. If we're talking about school, then "B". In a classroom, "A" can fuck right off. If I'm your teacher and you refuse to do the tasks I ask, don't come to class and don't expect me to try to read your mind to evaluate your understanding. No one's forcing you to come. Do the tasks assigned or bugger off.

Education comes from challenging yourself. If you refuse accept the challenge, you're not being educated so your mark is zero. Education is the CHANGE in understanding, not the store of it. It's a marginality concept.

Now, if we're talking about open-heart surgery, I want the guy who "can" over the guy who tries but can't.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
If he already knew it was the school's policy, why not relocate to a school where you can give 0s?

R=UP

As others have put it, the person who can, but won't, can feel free to piss off.

As an employer, I've encountered too many who both can't and try with the minimum effort possible, yet managed to graduate.
