$1:
There is a thriving horse meat business in Quebec; the meat is available in most supermarket chains. Horse meat is also for sale at the other end of the country, in Granville Island Market in downtown Vancouver. Horse meat is also available in high end Toronto butchers and supermarkets. Aside from the heritage of French cuisine at one end of the country and the adventurous foodies of Vancouver at the other, however, the majority of Canada shares the horse meat taboo with the rest of the Anglosphere. This mentality is especially evident in Alberta, where strong horse racing and breeding industries and cultures have existed since the province's founding.

Strange that Albertans don't want to eat the stuff but...
$1:
Alberta has been very successful selling horse meat for consumption to Europe, Japan and Brazil.

So I take it all this really comes down to is a few people find the idea of eating horsemeat morally reprehensible, and they want the rest of us to feel the same way as they do.

As for the rest of the "issues", I don't see a whole lot of difference here from the slaughter of beef, pork, chicken or lamb, drugs included.

Maybe that's just me but I find that beef doesn't taste much, it's the fat and spices you put on it that gives it taste. Horse meat has very little fat. But that lack of fat does not makes it idea when you want a steak (unless you eat it almost raw) or for making hamburgers (unless you add a binding agent like eggs).

I don't care how it tastes because I won't be trying it. I do believe the primary issue should be whether they are killed humanely and do not suffer. Anything short of that is cruelty and should be punished.

Agreed, Regina... all animals that we consume should be killed without making them suffer.
Seems this wasn't the case for this place, but don't judge them all by the actions of one.

But if you knew the horse was humanely killed, you still wouldn't try eating horse meat, if not, why?

Every butcher in The Netherlands sells horse meat. It's cheaper than beef and tastes a bit more warm. a bit more "bloody". It just has more taste. I am surprised it isn't as widely eaten here, actually.
