Expropriation for this reason would be an injustice to that family. Shame on DND if they do! Stick your Commandos somewhere else. Winnipeg has the base, stratigic location and arilift infrastructure and lots of land around it for training. Just one example of many options. But its easier to just kick a family off the land they've lived for over 200 years.

This would be a great boom for the community and a great move for the CF. Unfortunatly the farmers loose out. However, most of the farmers took advantage of the settlements from the government back in 2006-2007. Just the odd hold out now.

Expropriation has been done for a whole lot less in Canada, parks, roads etc

Rarely has the gov't "taken" someone's property without offering a bit over FMV, which is entirely different than assessment value.
And again, in most cases, expropriation involved buying the property at the minimum assessment value so it's not like the big bad gov't is just taking their property without reasonable compensation.
I dunno what offers were made but it seems like they are the only holdouts.
Guess what folks, you're pooched. I've seen the City of Windsor do the same thing just so they could join two small, crappy beaches into one large, crappy beach.
There were 6 properties between the beaches. 5 owners took the very fair offer while one held out and wound up getting less than the original offers when the City took the land.

How much is 200 yrs of your family history worth? I would think that is the families issue.

I guess yer unaware that in Canada you never OWN land, you merely rent it from the gov't.

A lot less than hundreds of potential jobs for a community, I actually have 200 years of my family history written in a book, I don't need some estate in Northern Ireland in order to pass on pride in my family's past. They have a story and while they will lose something important to them it is easily worth it for the community.

Doesn't make it right though.

Yes I am aware of our lack of property rights, that sucks too.
