The best explanation I have read so far is that it's just a News Media feeding frenzy on a common, yet strange events. These types of things have happened before, the biggest difference now might just be how much Media attention is being given to them.
Hopefully the results of any investigations get as much attention.

Fish don't usually die from oil, even during massive oil spills. It mostly impacts birds, sicne the solubility of oil in water is fairly small (unless you do like BP and add thousands of tonnes of checmials aimed at solubilizing the oil). Usually massive fish kills in the ocean are a result of a temperature inversion or something. Occasionally a disease or starvation is the culprit.
