Brenda Brenda: Anyone can say anything to anyone, and nothing is real on the internet, unless you see people face to face on cam. Maybe we should just use the "delete" button a bit more, when we chat somewhere with people we wouldn't chat to on the streets. Really, it's not that hard. I am sick and tired of the victims who say they were "lured into" anything online. Use your head. EVERYONE is one click from deletion. The problem Brenda, is that many of the victims are young teens or tweens. And lots of creeps out there trying to lure them. I'm not sure it's a good idea to just lay all the responsibility for this on the teens. And even parents are pretty powerless, since kids have so much access to the net that parents just can't patrol.

Really tricky situation here, but I'm not believing the guy saying he thought the 13 year old was lying.

KNOW what your kids are doing, and teach them that no one on the internet is real. My daughter got into a fight with a friend of hers, who started to call her names on the FB chat. OF COURSE I butted in and told the kid to knock it off and if not, I would call her mom. When my daughter confronted the girl in school, the girl said it was her brother who hacked into her account. Moral of the story (and the lesson my daughter learned): NO BODY is real, unless you see them on a cam.

While I want these scumbags caught and convicted, there more I think about it, the more bullshit there is in this case. The crown is making the argument that they guy believed the kid saying he was 13 but not his profile which said he was 18. I think the crown attempting to mind read like this is bullshit. And further the kid was neither but an adult cop. Really, the conviction should only stand if there really was an underage kid on the other end.
Maybe there should be no luring laws. But if somebody does lure a kid and has sex with them, then go after them with everything the law allows. But on a computer, it's all bullshit, as Brenda has pointed out.
Brenda - maybe in Podunk where you live, kid's access to the internet is more limited than in the big smoke. I think it's pretty well impossible here to prevent a kid who has their mind set on it to access the net without you knowing.

I agree with you about this case, btw.

Who ever said 13 yr olds were innocent? Then they are not "lured into" anything.

Before anyone starts to argue for the ability of 13 year olds to consent, a privilege that starts at 14 under Canadian Law, I believe the crux is that the policeman failed to provide evidence of his 13ness.
Pics or GTFO as we say here on the interwebs.

Are you sure this could never happen to your daughter? Wouldn't you still want the law to protect her (as much as the law can) from this?

Pics or GTFO as we say here on the interwebs. I believe the consent age has been raised to 16. And, it's always been 18 for internet luring.

Who ever said 13 yr olds were innocent? True. I once made out with a saucy little 13 year old...of course, I was 14 at the time, but still...

Yes, I would want a law to protect her if she went to go and see this moron, and there are. BUT, I think it is the parents job to teach the kids how to handle the internet. If kids are not comfy with questions asked, DELETE. If they cannot verify the person and he/she doesnt want to show their faces, DELETE. Don't add strangers. If they add you, DELETE. In this case, the cop pretended to be someone else than they are. Isnt this what this is all about? Shouldnt the cop be arrested now for impersonating, and luring an adult man in a scam?
