You're talking about the US. Anything pertaining to Canadian police?

Canadian Police don't have armoured personelle carriers? They don't have SWAT teams? In my city, the EPS have their own Grizzly, and so do the RCMP in some places.

Granted, they are not nearly so equipped as our southern neighbours, but it not the equipment - it's the attitude. That's what's changed from the RCMP I knew growing up.

I know too many OPP officers (granted I know no RCMP) to buy into the argument that they are a militarized organization, at least not to the point where it becomes a negative.

In Ontario the police tactical teams are known as ERT and/or TRU. No SWAT here. They exist because some hostile situations require a level of training and firepower that your average patrol officer doesn't have.

Want to disband those teams? Train every single officer to that standard.

Quite a leap there.

Not really. Saying the police are overly militarized then pointing to SWAT teams as proof implies you see them as a problem.

I don't. I love the ERT guys. I wish I had one living next door.

SWAT, ERT, TRU, saying they are different is really just splitting hairs.

The Police reply to the ticket is here
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NKv5mJWA_ho/T ... sakiss.jpg

They stand by it and give justification, which kind of makes sense but never said anything about asking the cheer team to disperse first, then warning them they'd get ticketed if they did not comply. If they had done this they would have made a point of saying it. Kind of tells me the cop just maybe walked up and nailed them. This kind of ticket deserves a warning and chance to leave.

Back when I worked in by-law this is what I did. If someone came along and righted the wrong or convinced me it would be I'd pull the ticket or not even write it. Always depended on the violation and the demeanor of the person when they approached me though.

BTW, by-law, parking, and cops CAN void your tickets (on the spot not days later) once written. I always laugh when I hear them say otherwise, sign of a jerk officer. If the officer does not want to void it then he should have the balls to just say so, "sorry, I'm not voiding it because you are being a jerk."

Knowing the correct terminology demonstrates that you have knowledge of the subject matter.

It is a leap, because I didn't 'imply' anything of the sort. It was you reading your own bias into my post that led you to that conclusion.

Zip asked "I wonder what's changed. There never used to be as many cops as well {equipped} as {there} are now..." and I simply stated what I felt had changed about the police. I gave no opinion beyond that.

I understand why SWAT/ERT/SRU teams exist, and their need to exist. And I do interact with the RCMP often at the Legion. Most are pretty good guys, but once in a while you get one (or an ex-military member) that have the "us-vs-them" "you are with us or with the [crack dealers, meth heads, jaywalkers]" attitude. And IMHO that is exactly the wrong attitude to have if you are a public servant.

Cops are people. Some people are jerks, some cops are jerks. I've met jerk cops, but the fact that they exist doesn't lead me to believe there is a sizable problem with policing in Canada that needs to be fixed.

The hiring process is designed to weed out undesirables, but it isn't 100% effective. Not much is.

Lemmy Lemmy:
I'm a Western alumni and I recall the cops being pretty tolerant of student parties in my day. But this is a case of "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" for the London cops. The Fanshawe fracas a couple of years ago was a major embarrassment for the London Police and they aren't about to allow any more college bashes to turn into full blown riots.

This.
