Fuck. Sometimes I hate Canadian media.

This article goes to show why more Canadians don't support our efforts in Afghanistan. They don't know what we are doing over there. All we hear from the media is another solider is dead! Not much if anything about the great things we are doing like building schools, educating women and many other things. I have talked with people that have been to Afghanistan and the real story isn't in the papers.

Was a member of the CF just back from Afghanistan holding a presentation here at UBC O last week. Was amazing to hear it from the soldiers side. I had heard stories from friends of friends, but hearing this man talk about what's actually going on, how much we're helping.
The most interesting thing that he told us was that they in fact don't want us there, but they realize that it's a necessity for now, and support our troops realizing the reality that we're there until the Afghanistan Government, Police and Armed Forces can take over from us (I can try and clarify that a little, I'm sort of rushing through things tonight, lab pissed me off). Maybe that's the stat that the CBC is twisting around? I don't know, makes me happy that I don't have a TV to watch their crap on anymore (although I do make it into the TV room for Hockey Night in Canada).

Another weak hit piece. If they were so bent on misrepresentation, they'd have buried the Poll they initiated. All this proves is that they hadn't a good view of what the average Afghani felt on the subject(s) before. Now they know, Reported it, and stand by the conclusions. What more do you want?

If the CBC were responsible for providing the News to Afghani's, there would certainly be a big issue here. However, they are only responsible to providing News to Canadians. How the Afghanis feel about the whole affair(s) is certainly a concern, but overall it is a pretty minor concern from the Canadian perspective. It is our Money, our Citizens, our Equipment, and our Interests that take precedence over Afghani Opinions.

One of the factors I see here is the major difference in the texture of canadian society versus the US society. With our miniscult military, there is only a small segment with any first hand knowledge of things military----which is not the case in the US.

This lack of an incidence of first hand experience, combined with massive immigration is reflected in the "apparent public opinion."

Then you compound that with a government financed media, immediately after a change of government after 13 years.......

How can Canadians form an honest and realistic opinion when they only see doom and gloom from the CBC? Many of us seek out the news but I doubt most Canadians do more than simply watch the evening news. When all they hear is dead soldier after dead soldier with no context or perspective on the events, they have little choice to form a negative opinion.

Last time I checked, there's more than just the CBC when it comes to the nightly news. There's Global and CTV, the former of which I think gets more ratings than the National.

Indeed, and one could say that the farther away from the CBC, the more honest the news becomes. That still is no excuse for taxpayers having to stand for such crap.

The BBC recently admitted and came to terms with it's bias and I think it's high time we follow their example.

Sorry, but the Death of Soldiers and other unfortunate events is News. For Canadians it is the most vital News of all. The CBC does "Good News" stories on Afghanistan very regularly, perhaps you missed them?
