I agree. We need Science to be unfetterred by Political interference. The only exception being sensitive Military Research. An Informed Voter is the best Voter and since the Voter is also paying for that Research, they deserve to know what their Tax dollars are producing.
I see this as part of the whole anti-science, and by extension anti-intellectual, tone of the Conservative Party. Their benches include several people who have yet to accept the theory of evolution, and since they feel their religious beliefs are under attack from science, they discard all science.
Think about...astronomy, geology, biology...they all challenge the religious beliefs of a lot of Harper's caucus.
At the same time, a lot of science...especially the environmental sciences...interfere with the economic conservatives' cause of profit taking precedence over everything. They value the technology that comes from science, but would discard any science that questions how they would use that technology.
Mix the two together and you get a quiet war on science from the party that currently holds government.
