the muzzling of scientists by the Harper government is a major affront not just to science, but to free speech and democracy. It also lacks transparency because it keeps facts from the public, and accountability because it prevents the fact-based questioning of government policy.

and thanks again...

The things is that science is very important in our society and, if we are to advance with other developed countries, to our economy.

I agree. We need Science to be unfetterred by Political interference. The only exception being sensitive Military Research. An Informed Voter is the best Voter and since the Voter is also paying for that Research, they deserve to know what their Tax dollars are producing.

Politics should be kept out of a lot of things, but good luck with that.

I see this as part of the whole anti-science, and by extension anti-intellectual, tone of the Conservative Party. Their benches include several people who have yet to accept the theory of evolution, and since they feel their religious beliefs are under attack from science, they discard all science.

Think about...astronomy, geology, biology...they all challenge the religious beliefs of a lot of Harper's caucus.

At the same time, a lot of science...especially the environmental sciences...interfere with the economic conservatives' cause of profit taking precedence over everything. They value the technology that comes from science, but would discard any science that questions how they would use that technology.

Mix the two together and you get a quiet war on science from the party that currently holds government.

Sooo we should throw out all of the findings of the IPCC? Sounds good to me.

You obviously know little or nothing about the IPCC, faille. They review all of the articles and data for scientific accuracy and relevance first and come out with a scientific report.

When the political portion of the reporting process takes place, the scientific report is generally softened to make guys like Bush and Harper happy.

The political interference is anti-science once again.

Science represents an objective truth, and that is threatening to a party that focusses so much on controlling the message. The Conservatives are actually more hostile to sceince than they are to the arts. In the US this anti-intellectualism has reached such a level that ignorance is now considered a positive attribute.
