This (not) startling news goes hand in hand with the previous "under funded military" threads.

So, once again we're back to what is an acceptable level of funding and what can we get with our current critically low level?

Given that we aren't likely to see any increased funding in the near future and may actually see a decrease it begs the question. What exactly can we afford? If I was to hazard a guess the best we can expect to see is more used fighters, used submarines, old worn out frigates and an underfunded Army with no modern armor or equipment.

But on an interesting side note. The Liberals are looking at replacing the CADPAT cammo combat dress to the tune of $500 million dollars. So, apparently we can have the most hard to find soldiers on the battlefield but we can't have the pointy end equipment to go with them.

Oh we could have both, but Canadian taxpayers are too cheap and prefer social programs and tax cuts instead.

The real surprise will be if we end up with either. Seriously, it's a 100% certainty they'll manage to fuck this up. Overall the entire thing sounds like Carmella and Tony Soprano cussing out AJ for about the millionth time "you can have a drum set or you can have a trip to Disneyland but you can't have both!".

Thinking about this I suspect you'll end up with neither.

Either that or one half-assed frigate that can't keep up with any other NATO or US ships, and a shipyard that gets another half of a ship built before it's shuttered permanently, for about ten or twelve dollars. But that's OK because it'll give some politician twenty or twenty-five years from the opportunity to play the "hey, why don't we build our own navy ships here at home?" card for himself. And the beat(ing) goes on......
