"No one has laid out, anywhere, that it's possible to ultimately win a war in this region.

"No one. And historical experience shows that it's been impossible – whether it be Alexander the Great, the British in the 19th century, or the Russians in the 20th century.

It would appear that neither history nor reality is one of Lyaton's strong suites

$1:
But the historical portrait Layton paints is far fuzzier in reality.

The British did in fact defeat an Afghan insurgency in the Second Afghan War in 1880 – and the battle ended in Kandahar, where Canadian troops are currently located.

And Alexander's trek through Asia did not stall in Afghanistan.

It ended in India, after his troops had already marched through Afghanistan and founded the cities of Herat and Kandahar. The latter was named after him.

Layton's remarks drew scorn from some military experts.

A British ex-special forces officer who fought alongside the mujahedeen in the 1980s and now runs a security company called the comments erroneous. Alan Bell also called them unhelpful to the Afghan government, and to the morale of Canadian soldiers and their families.

And Canadian military analyst John Thompson added: "I don't talk about social policy. (Layton) shouldn't talk about military history or strategy. I don't know much about social policy, and it's clear he doesn't know much about military history or strategy."

These guys overlooked the fact that the Chin dynasty armies (Genghis Knan's Mongols) rolled through Afghanistan on the way to crush Persia, like a dose of salts.

Then Tamerlane's Golden horde......which founded the Mogol dynasty in India.

Afghanistan has been conquered/pacified numerous times.

Layton's problem is his lamented glorious Red Army met it's Waterloo there.

The taliban is not formidable it's merely a loose association of bandits.

Considering Dawn Black is the NDP defence specialist, and the closest thing to anyone from the NDP who has ever been near the military, it's no wonder why he's clueless. Hell, even the deserters that the far left lovesso dearly, are soon sick of the NDP rhetoric.

This is political positioning, pure and simple. A PR event for the "WTF" party.
They won't lose any votes because the folks who are against the mission are still against the mission and the loose Liberal supporters may vote NDP if they feel Dion may follow the Manley report.
The folks who support the mission are probably already Conservatives and the olf school Libs who did support the mission either fight it out with their weak leader or vote to the right. Considering Harper is doing such a just and moderate job, I'd forcast a lot voting right.

Hey I know.. lets send Osama bin Layton there to become Prime Minister of Afganistan.

He can install a new rebuilding program, daycare, schooling and Medical.

could be a socialist Utopia in the middle east.

Free care bear dolls for all the taliban war lords trade for guns.. (Don't shoot just give em a care bear stare), and a free hugs everyday...

Who is Sarkozy visiting? Don't get me wrong here I want more from NATO but let's get serious here is their initial expecations:
$1:
(...) When the agreements were signed in Bonn on 5 December, the Afghan delegations participating in the United Nations talks concluded an agreement on setting up an interim authority and administration in Kabul, in Afghanistan. This agreement also envisaged the rapid deployment of a Force, mandated by the UN, to contribute towards peacekeeping in Kabul and its surrounding area. France, requested to do so by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, is ready to join a multinational security Force. That’s what the select Council has just decided this morning. The specific details of this Force’s mandate will be laid down by a United Nations Security Council resolution currently being drafted in New York and in some capitals.

With the new Afghan authorities’ agreement, this Force’s mission is expected to be to ensure the security of Kabul’s new political and administrative structures, and the international organizations - the UN of course - present in the capital.

It’s expected to be a short-term mission, lasting a few months. UN mandated, it’s likely to be commanded by an ad hoc structure, in coordination with CENTCOM, i.e. with the US Central Command running the current operations against al-Qaida. France is ready to shoulder her responsibilities by deploying special units, which are immediately available, to help ensure the safety of the members of the new administration in Kabul and its premises.

France is also proposing to contribute her fighter aircraft to the necessary protection and support of the multinational force, either those of the naval aviation group or those she is preparing to deploy, as I said, in Central Asia. She is also prepared to assist in the training of Afghan teams specializing in demining operations. Finally, she could participate, under conditions as yet to be determined, with in particular our European allies and partners, in the future training of Afghan armed forces, if this were desired.

With her European, and especially British and German, allies, France would thus make a significant contribution, one which, with several hundred men, will be capable of affording security to the interim administration as soon as it begins operating./.

What was not expected was the departure from this mission to Iraq in 2003. THIS mission should have been done with ease had the initial plan of attack been executed as advertised.

Bingo !

Let me put it in a way he actually wanted to say it.

agree that is a good idea , otherwise they'd be allowing them to ruin the mission without out even having to go to the polls over it .

but liberals might be willing to force an election over this issue but its still doubtful maybe ?
