BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Benn Benn:
Someone is going to pay me to surf message boards while at work?? Sign me up!!!!

Where else will you hear your boss saying "Smith what are you doing paperwork for, get back to screwing around on the internet or you'll be pounding the pavement!"

God point. I guess that's who the conservatives can stop this idea is by saying we'll be paying government employees to horse around on the net all day.

Another thought occurs to me...

Government Employee Government Employee:
I work for the government and what I posted is true.

Internet Sceptic Internet Sceptic:
Yeah? Well here's five documents I found from YOUR OWN AGENCY that proves you're full of sh*t!!!

So the next step for the government, obviously, is to arrest the 'Internet Sceptic' and send him/her to a re-education camp.

Fortunately Bart we don't have Re-education camps in this country
yet.

If the Fundies or the Muzzies take over that may change.

Come to think of it, my check from "Big Oil" is a little late this month.

Hey does anybody remember Elle Lite?

http://patterico.com/2010/01/24/still-m ... ma-letter/

Then there was that one where the White House set up an outfit where you check in, and rat out somebody making anti-government remarks online. I forget what that was called, but it would be a good way to map out the hot spots of internet dissension if you have the kind of scheme described in the article.

So does anyone notice that George Bush had no problem with internet freedom? Maybe that's because the internet forums mostly were on his side proving what fake bullsh*t the fringe media was trying to pass off on him.

But on the other side of the coin we have the Clinton's who said there was "too much freedom on the internet" and now Obama who wants an information ministry to keep the net under control and to deliberately silence anti-left speech.

Could be abused, but could be useful for a number of reasons. Chances are good that it would happen anyway whether we knew about it or not. Likely has been happening on some level for years now.

Industry/Corporations have certainly been doing it.

I am tempted to agree to anything that helps us purge the fluffy white demons from our previously pristine ice fields.

It's one thing for private groups to try to influence public thought - the news media has been doing it for years - but when government starts to do it then that can be a very dangerous thing.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
I don't believe anyone on CKA is actively against the Seal Hunt and I've never
seen much of a real debate on the issue.

I assume a universal agreement on CKA, but I could be completely wrong.

Honestly, I don't care about the government employees. The "training" shit
makes me laugh a lot. Troll Training!

If they were wrong, we'd argue with them. And we'd win.

Simple,

When the CSIS show up at Trevor's doorstep and tell him to get his forum under control....then what?

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
AHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHA

Yes. The government plans to arrest the webmaster of Canada Kicks Ass.

I don't even think the Cons are that bad.

Learn to take a few breaths.

Maybe everything is fine?

If that happened Bart, that'd be a clear call of concern.

But it won't happen because people would go BATSHIT for good reason.

Mr. C, when the Canadian Human Rights Commission started not even the guy who wrote the legislation creating it had any idea what a beast it would morph into. So the CHRC serves as the perfect example of how government aggrandizes power to itself.

Now we want to let the government start influencing opinion on web forums like this one. The next step, obviously, is to regulate web forums to make sure that only "correct" information is allowed and I have no doubt that some people will find that a 'reasonable' thing to do. And the next step after that...?

The point is that this is how government works and it is how government has always worked.

Crap, look at the $1 million dollar gun registry that became a $2 billion dollar juggernaut. And you're NOT concerned about that same government officially taking a place on a forum like this?

I already know the official line: Spin spin, bullshit, deflect, distract and lie. Are you really expecting anything different from their normal routine?

How is that obvious (going to play devil's advocate)?

I mean, that is quite the leap from influencing a topic on a peripheral issue to controlling public opinion on all, and you make it sound like if it happened it wouldn't create a media shit storm? We don't even know the breadth this project might eventually have, or if they will even keep their identity secret when posting. I'm thinking that if it was an issue of import, the voters or one of the political parties would make their choice clear come election season.

The media picked up on it when it was just a pilot program (with government cooperation!) for a single contentious subject which is a largely polarized topic in Canada with lots of misinformation out there, and is something which numerable governments of various affilitations have supported. I'll become more worried when it becomes something akin to the US chasing TPB across the internet.

Last time I checked, the leader of the Bloc and the PQ have yet to have a black bag put over their head and dragged away to an undisclosed location, and I think a larger proportion of the political groups and supporters out there would go for that. :p
