One of Hawkings theories was that you can reverse time and an egg droped and smashed would be rearranged back to its past state. Then years later hawkings said this theory is not possible and he was wrong. Not all theories are fact and can be disputed and later changed.
Fair enough, but the definition of "theory" in the scientific community is the following:

a theory is a systematic and formalized expression of all previous observations, and is predictive, logical, and testable.
In other words, by conducting experiments and observing their results, one can develop a theory about the relevant subject.
The purpose and existence of science is to cosntantly question and challenge our understanding and to try and prove wrong our accepted theories.
Currently, the theory of gravity is actually imperfect, and the LHC could provide a more perfect answer...
