I don't think it is in Ontario. If it is, it definitely isn't enforced. Most companies will just schedule you for 8.5 hours and pay you for 8 expecting you to take it. It's common in places that have shit time management programs, so they don't actually know how long employees are out. But nothing says you can't work through it (especially if you're a waitress who makes tips).

You mean you just punch in the department staffing requirements, the employee's qualifications and their seniority dates and the computer does it all for you?
Does it come with a "shit list" just punch in: Screw this person (dropdown name list) over (choose how from dropdown list) option?

For sure. Most salaried jobs are based on 7.5hrs/ day for record keeping purposes (8 hour day minus lunch) but nobody keeps track of your comings and going and people taking 1 hour lunch is common ( or they might est at their desk and not take lunch “break” at all).

But what I’m saying is I don’t think workers can legally elect to work 8.5 paid hours straight with no break.

In Québec, as soon as you work 5 consecutive hours, the employer must give you a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.

Estimates are $300k - $500k per outlet. But that doesn't include upgrades that the franchisee puts back into the restaurant.

When I lived in Fort Mac I researched opening a Tims or Second Cup, as there was no drive thru coffee place on the North side of town. I woulda made a fortune!

That must be net profit, not gross revenue? I found links to news stories that said average gross for single location was 2002-2008 was $1.5M

That was estimated net. You didn't have a lot of wiggle on costs, as they all had to be bought from the parent company. Second Cup, you could source food wherever, but Tims is a lock in.

Where you can make more money is through labour costs. Getting rid of the high priced bakers in the back and going with frozen lumps you reheat, went a long way in cutting labour costs at a Timmies.

Anybody know how accurate this claim is because if it's true then, there's definitely an ulterior motive to increasing the minimum wage which the Ont. gov't failed to tell people about?

At face value it can’t be true unless the tax bracket for the additional $104 in earnings is taxed at more than 50%. This would be false because:

a) Canada doesn’t have a tax bracket that high and

b) Minimum wage would be at the lowest tax rate

Remember the marginal tax rate system means that the higher tax rates only apply to the earnings above the limit. For example suppose a country had a 10% tax bracket for earnings up to $40k and 50% tax for earnings above $40k. Someone who makes $41,000 doesn’t pay 50% tax, they pay (10% x 40k) + (50% x $1k) = $4,500 in tax

Why respond? If someone truly believes you get taxed 1/3 at $11... they obviously don't earn minimum wage
