Way to go.

I don't know why the writer felt it neccessary to put vicious and unprovoked in quotes. If he feels those words are editorializing, then just leave them out.

Oh, I see, if you're helping a cop, you can utter death threats and beat the tar out
of some guy and walk away.

But, if you are helping yourself or a friend, it's assault and battery.

Jus' checking. ;)

8O In this case, the guys intervention was crucial to the officers survival. Personally, I think the guy should have snapped the bastards neck!

Edit: Just watched this on the news. " The 57 year old suspect has a violent history, and is well known to police".

nope, if your helping someone who's life is in danger, you can use up to lethal force to stop the assault or prevent it from happening again. The fact that he was helping a police officer is immaterial

agree, john q public doesn't need to know what was said in the heat of a fight because then they get stupid ideas in their head.

You misunderstood. Vicious and unprovoked were in quotes, which makes them seem doubtful. I can't think of what would be a "provoked" knife attack on a cop. I also doubt any knife attack is "gentle". Just leave those words out of the story and the meaning would still be the same.
